MG MGF Technical - Picking up my VVC on saturday!
A few of you may recognise me as neil, who has recently been asking a few questions about mgf's. Well i've taken the plunge and as of saturday i will be the proud owner of a 1997 P-reg VVC. Only paying £7000 for her, which isn't bad. She has a small scuff on the front bumper but im sure that can be easily sorted, other than that shes a beauty and in a lot better condition than some of the more higher priced models i looked at. Got another question for you lot though (lol), can anybody tell me what is the largest size wheel you can fit with out any problems? |

Neil, Congrats on the purchase! Hasn't taken you long before making your first mod....the dark side of MG ownnership is strong indeed! As for your question......It has been known for 18" wheels to fit the F, however, this is very rare.....17's do fit but I think that the majority go for 16's as they are made by MG themselves and they do offer a very nice selection. BEWARE that if you buy a set of alloys that are not produced by MG then they may not fit due to the strange PCD of MG's...... No doubt someone will provide a more detailed description of options.... Neil, you can always buy Mike S's PCD adaptor which can fit more of the after market wheels out there. Definately the choice to go for if you are after some alloy wheels! 1997 VVCs are prone to cambolt failures, so get the torque checked after buying the car. Other than that and a headgasket, the car goes pretty well! Good luck. |

Well i know the person beforehand obviously didnt visit here, as i think they missed a few problems. Theres a bill for £2000 of engine work to do with the head and fitting of new cambelts. And it's only done 4000 miles since the work was carried out. So i know it has a new headgasket, but do i still have to get the cambolt checked? |

Neil, then it should be ok! Just get it checked at next service after 3000 more miles. It's not a huge job. Just when it needs an oil change, ask the mechanic to check over the bolt torque. The person who you are buying it from obviously had a similar failure as well (I had one recently). But don't be put off by this as this will therefore have 'rectified' the major weaknesses of the F. Headgasket (with steel dowels) and the cam bolt. You should be fine! Enjoy your new car! MGF is a great one when looked after carefully. I enjoyed it so much (except in the traffic jam inthe morning everyday.. that's one main reason moving to another car with automatic transmission) |
