MG MGF Technical - Pipercross Viper Installation
Anyone know the enquiries email address for Pipercross? I had a Viper kit installed recently, but the air intake has been taken below the car & tilted towards the rear to avoid the risk of sucking surface water in. I want to find out if there's any reason not to shorten the intake pipe and route it to the side intake instead. I would imagine that the existing fitment must lose some of the potential gains at higher speeds because if anything high speed air passing the intake pipe would tend to suck air out of it rather than giving a ram air effect. Definitely don't want that! Any help appreciated... Chris |

I believe the Viper/ITG filters work best with a supply of 'neutral'or still air. This is why mostpeople have use the side intake, as very little air is forced into the vent. No reason why you can't do the same. This is what I did with mt ITG. Can be tricky feeding the cold air hose through to the side vent though. |

Chris, Hopefully going to get mine installed either this weekend, or next. Did you get install instructions? I got vague ones, but seemed to be for the standard pipercross induction kit, not the viper system. Pretty obvious what to do, however one question. I see on Mike Satur's site, there is a blue plastic elbow to connecto to throttle body. However I have been supplied with a metal elbow. There is a rubber o-ring to connect elbow to throttle body, metal to metal, but there isn't one to connect elbow to the metal housing of the filter. Also, there's no intruction on how to actually oil the filter. Any help much appreciated. Thanks Paul W SIL 7478 |

Paul as you have observed the Pipercross supplied Viper is a different specification to our kit, dunno why they still use that aluminium elbow. Mike |

Paul, Don't honestly know - kit was installed for me (bit lazy on this one...) & I don't have the instructions. Just had a quick look at mine - has a short (3") blue plastic pipe from the throttle body, then an even shorter metal link to a red plastic elbow which leads into the filter unit. Any clues as to the best place to route the intake pipe to?? Chris |

>> Any clues as to the best place to route the intake pipe to?? << If you can, the near side air vent: less dust and debris to clog the filter element Chris. |

So no ideas on how to oil this filter? if not, i'll just dismantle it, and oil everything. |

Paul, No experience with a Pipercross filter but with K&N's it's just a question of having the whole element impregnated with oil. I'd suggest that the principle is similar - just ensure that the filter has an overall covering of oil. Chris |

a very light coating unless you are doing off road dusty work then a heavier application.HTH Mike |

Ahh finally done. What a pain in the r's to fit though. Everything seemed so simple, until you realise there's a big piece of plastic blocking the ideal route for intake pipe. Absolutely no obvious way to remove it, beside chop it into pieces are removed bit by bit. Happy now its installed, but one thing i would say is I think i'd go for Mike Satur's kit with the plastic elbow, the metal elbow sucks, and doesn't fit well. (had to use electrical tape to widen filter to provise a tight fit.) ((mike, do you sell those elbows separately??)) Anyway all done, here's some photo's. (ps crap quality, because i was using my phone.) The engine bay opened up. http://www.caligari.net/mgf/image(04).jpg The only discrete evidence of kit (ride height high, due to jacking up and removal of wheel, it settled afterwards.) http://www.caligari.net/mgf/image(04).jpg Close up of side air intake http://www.caligari.net/mgf/image(05).jpg View from the boot http://www.caligari.net/mgf/image(06).jpg The horrible piece of plastic that had to be removed. http://www.caligari.net/mgf/image(13).jpg |

Paul, When you put the hood back down after covering the engine bay, was it a pain to get it flush? I've still got mine sitting proud after having it out for a prod to find the source of my rattle. Leigh |

Leigh NP fitting it back down. Only think i can think of that would prevent it sitting properly, would be the rubber seal that the soft top sits on. How's it sittign at the moment? is it raised at one side? are there any gaps? Is there still a run on Sunday? and are you going? Paul. (I need to search for a rattle as well, well not a rattle as such, but something is resonating at high revs, near the passenger side.) |
