MG MGF Technical - Please explain
Tramlining. Why is it with other cars they don't tram line if you fit the same size of tyre all round. |
S Laithwaite |
'cos they don't have 205mm, low profile tyres all round |

What is tramlining? |
Sean |
Tramlining. The tendancy of the wheels of a car to follow ruts in the road and felt mainly through the steering wheel. Caused mainly by wide section tyres on the front wheels. SF |

My f's on 215s all round, Yes you can notice tramlining a bit, but after a while your arm muscles build up and you forget about it :) Other techniquest are just not to drive in ruts in the road! |
Kingsley |
probably the F is a lot lighter in the front area compared to other cars. |

Theory, statements and conclusions. Speciallists may correct me if I'm wrong, please. As Scarlet said, wider tyres to the front have influence and IMO a change of the Toe angles could correct the higher roll resistance. 1. 'roll resistance' is different between different tyres. Also, the wider they are, the larger is the roll resistance. 2. Different roll resistance means different force to the suspension (acting opposite to the drive direction) 3. rubber parts in the suspension are not equal 'spring' behavior. So different forces result in different movements under this different loads. 4. tramlining happens if the wheels are toe Zero or toe out and also if there is play in the suspension, mainly at the rear (ball joints or wheel bearings or tie bar). So what ? I think your suspension could be better adjusted. Did you try Toe In ? On the other hand. Any trouble with the rear tie bar rubber bearings ? Did you try to add compliance washers ?
