MG MGF Technical - Post HGF talking - steel or plastic dowels

Hi Guy,

As you have follow, after my HGF the dealer change the HG but did not put the steel dowels. Instead he keeps the plastic one...

So I send him a lettre in order to complain and the answer came today...

The dealer told my he receive the HG kit as part number : LVQ000090. This kit include an HG and steel dowels. But Steel dowel caming in that kit are not compatible with the head because their size is too wide compare to the plastic one. For them plastic one are the only OK and they are compatible with the new HG........

So who's got input on that question ??? IS the part number OK for a new HG on MGF ???
Is this dowels problem true.

In fact I need to do an answer and I want to include as much info as I could. If somebody go photo of the workshop manual concerning that part ....

Sounds to me like a bit of dealer BullSh*t!

Dealer bulls**t again. The dowels are supposed to be a tight fit, compared to worn plastic they will need tapping into the block with a copper /hide hammer.Change them at next HGF;-)

That idiots (apology) haven't looked up the affiliated official in released MG bulletin.
Not included in any workshop manual.

It clearly shows including depth measures how to get in the damn metal dowels in.

I'll try to email some information. May last some days.

Unfortunately there seems little consistency in the size of the dowel holes or their spacing, I have had three batches of dowels made in marginally different sizes so that I can fit to any size of hole, the variance in hole size can be up to 3 thou which is considerable, with the smallest hole and the largest dowel it is almost impossible to get the dowels in, even with a large hammer. I always test the fit and either ease the holes or pick an appropriate size of dowel. Failing this the dowel can be made margianlly smaller with emery strip or wet/dry. It occurs to me that this is a simple fitting task that *should* have been undertaken when the head was off.

Dave ,good advice esp for French dealers;-)
The standard dowels tend to be tight as Dave says, we use our own design which have taper ends and better tolerance hence they tap in easier,if you need any Dave;-)

Well it's good to have on paper that your dealer didn't want to use the steel dowels, which were provided by MG Rover.

Hope your next gasket failure will be there when the dealership is still in business.

cut and paste from my site:
MG Rover has reviewed this part (the head gasket). The new gasket has the combination LVB000230 marked on it and may come with two steel dowels. The older gasket carries the combination LVB100760.
Partnumbers:
* GUG702576HG old gasket, used with plastic dowels
* GUG702613HG newer gasket, comes with two steel dowels (and is allready fitted as standard from March 2001 and maybe earlier)

Cheers,
Erik
