MG MGF Technical - power steering

I've had my '97 VVC 2 months and am extremely non-technical. 2 weeks ago with no overheating problems beforehand steam poured out of it as I got home - back the garage I bought it from - head gasket problem diagnosed & was fixed. But the power steering light now won't go off (yes it is back at the garage) but any ideas why or has anyone else experienced this?
Clare

It's on *all* thie time ?

Check the Power Assisted Steering (PAS) fuse under the bonnet.
It's at the extreme right hand side as you look under the bonnet.
There will be a white/clear plastic cover with an orange 40amp (I think) fuse.

If that's fine then best (only?) way forward is to get the dealer to plug the
car into their 'test book' thingumy. That should diagnose it straight away.

It could be any one of a number of things and I'm not aware of any
'common' PAS faults.

Clare,

I believe the connection to the seat in relation to the seat-belt pre-tensioners has also been known to cause this problem, loose connection I believe. The wire in question can be seen (and is mentioned) in the 'Seat Removal' article in the new MGF FAQ....

Doh!
That's an old one. I should have known that.
Oh well.. :-)
Thanks Paul!

Paul,

Clare is reffering to the PAS light not the SRS one.

Thanks to those who offered advice. Have briefly spoken to the garage and am awaiting further info but minor electrical (fuse)problem purely to do with the PAS light seems to have been the case rather than huge PAS problem which I had feared! - and I should have it back in time for the Easter holidays lets hope for sunshine - thanks again guys

Just curious, did you like the car without PAS ?
(Parking excluded!)

I've taken to running without the PAS fuse in... until Jo gets in the car
and shouts at me for taking the fuse out again. <g>

So is it completely fine and dandy to remove the EPAS fuse? I suppose if the steering wheel is directly connected to the front wheels, then it's directly connected and that's that. I'd been thinking of trying my car without PAS.
David Bainbridge

Yes. It's fine.

You get a little red light to let you know that the fuse is out. :-)

You'll be quite surprised how much information the EPAS masks.

Be warned that it'll flag a fault with the MEMS unit so make
sure and tell your dealer the next time they plug the test book in!

Try it. You can always put the fuse in again.

Sirkan from Turkey and I tried this a couple of years back Rob will point you in the correct direction.

Had my car MOT'd today by non MG/Rover place.
They poo'd themselves after doing the Exhaust gas test as they thought they had broken something (PAS light on ctr of dash on).
As they passed the car, I put them out of their misery and expained that during fast idle emissions test (30 seconds > 3000 rpm) as there was no speedo reading, EPAS declared a fault and shut down (until a +ve speedo reading returns).

Now, had they failed it for something trivial......
