MG MGF Technical - Power Steering failure
On the way back from town today the red warning light (with the steering wheel in it) came on. As I don't have manual handily in the car (or at work), I'm guessing this is the Power Steering light - I could sort of tell by the heaviness of trying to turn the wheels. I stopped the car, had a look under boot and bonnet (nothing obviously wrong). Restarted car and light went off. Is this likely to be just a one off thing or could it be something more serious? Car was serviced 2 weeks ago and was running wee bit low on petrol today (in the red) as I was on my way to fill up. Any thoughts? |

Emma Had you at some time been sitting without moving forward but had the engine revving fairly high? If so this is the fail safe kicking in and yes stop, switch off and restart resets it. Ted |

Thanks Ted I had been stuck in a car park for at least 20 minutes (lunchtime shopping is great!) with the engine running moving incredibly slowly but I don't think the revs were that high - I remember looking at the dash when the light came on and it was just over 2000 revs. If it's just a safety mechanism then that's a relief! Yep That could be enough Emma, the ECU for the PAS reads the rev counter and the speedo and expects both to increase together - if they dont it decides there is fault and switches the PAS off so that you dont get overlight steering whilst travelling at speed. Ted |
