MG MGF Technical - PRT plumbing
Has anybody fitted a Land Rover Freelander PRT remote thermostat into an 'F? Is it just a matter of plumbing the thermostat housing into the cold leg from the radiator with a bypass to the hot leg from the engine, connecting them with a length of hose and an T-junction? It am about to carry out the five year big service this winter and I am planning to make this improvement while I am at it. Until now, a drilled 82deg thermostat has been my temporary precaution against another HGF but I think a PRT is a better solution. |

Hello Jon, long time no speak :) I recall Dave Lingstone has (let) use the Freelander PRT parts to convert. I have sourced the same parts recently and they wait in my garage for further works. All I know is linked on top of this old site. http://www.mgfcar.de/thermostat/index.htm Mainly at Carlos and Rob Bell http://web.tiscali.it/elise_s1/ The archives contain another consumption of the options with the Land Rover PRT. Good Luck with it. Regards Dieter ---> missing Norway at http://www.frappr.com/mgf :)) |

>>I recall Dave Lingstone has (let) use the Freelander PRT parts to convert. Unfortunately, I can't help. My PRT was a retrofit of standard MG TF parts to an older F. Consequently, it came with all the modified hoses to replace the existing ones. |

What I am after is the optimal location of the remote thermostat - should I fit it close to the radiator or close to the engine? What will happen to the efficiency of the heater? With the thermostat loop in parallell with the heater circuit I fear that the heater may lose some of its water flow. Would it be a good idea to keep the old thermostat in order to maintain the flow of coolant through the heater? |

If it is the optimal set-up or not is difficult to say,but my own system has worked for years now and is a very well damped "servo loop" . As seen on Dieters pages the main thermostat is up front ,just ahead of the radiator. But a holed 82 deg. thermostat is still in its original place! I have added a separate temp sensor by using the bleed screw at the left side of the engine ( the 5 mm bolt -type bleedscrew ).This sensor goes to a digital readout and is rock steady at any load. Only on very long idle and standstill this sensor moves up slightly before the radiator fan starts. The whole system ran the first season with a data-logger system borrowed from work. 3 diff. sensor locations monitored temperatures and all was behaving as planned at all driving paces. The original digital readout is now exchanged for a digital steak thermometer (Donīt laugh!!) with itīs alarm set to 90 deg. A digital circuit alternates between 2 sensors (the original one that really shows variations but never moves the instrument!) and the said sensor at the bleed screw. As I dont have any radio in the "Green Frog" the blanking plate makes a good place to put additional instrumentation... A Happy HGF-free 2006 to All,Carl. |

Thanks, Carl, Dave and Dieter! Carl, with your layout I assume the heater works at least as well as it used to before the conversion. Can anybody with experiences from both 'F models and late 'TF supply their viewpoints regarding the efficiency of the heater where a PRT is fitted compared to what it is like in an older car? It would also be very interesting to see the official workshop manual description of the cooling system on a late TF model to pinpoint the differences from the earlier models. I found a TF manual on http://mgpassion.free.fr/pdf/mgtfWorkshop_manual.pdf but it was for an early model and of no use in this regard. |

Jon, no newer available currently. This is from the EPC and reflects what's on Rob's site http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/2630.htm http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/1166.htm http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/1080.htm http://www.mgfcar.de/epc/1122.htm No change with the heater or heater circuit. It's just about the temperature increase ramp from cold and thermal shocks that got improved/decreased. Not to forget the new design coolant expansion bottle with level sensor. |
