MG MGF Technical - PRT thermostat and gasket
Well after 7 years on this board, noticed oil in the water and took to old mg garage (now charles hurst vauxhall) and head gasket gone. My belief that the pressure thermostat would prevent failure has proved useless. I always took it easy until engine warm and all other recommendations. i got away with it on my first mgf but the mgtf 135 now 7 years old and 23,000 miles has popped. 185quid to fix! great christmas present so its good bye mgtf Brian |

£185 seems cheapish for replacing a head gasket, got to be worth doing hasn't it or you'll be selling the car spares or repair. Your call though, good luck ;) |

Sorry finger trouble It ws in for £150 service and then Head Gasket problem cost additional £800 I aslo got them to replace the timing belt as they had the head off I had hoped that the new Pressure thermostat avoided the believed cause of thermostat opening and dumping cold water directly on head but nope 23,000 miles with the PRT - useless |

If it was as simple as that MGR would have solved the problem and also simply removing the thermostat would have solved it as well. Of course none of these is true. Very sorry for you mate. |

When my F suffered its 'apparently unavoidable' HGF was repaired at the local Porsche garage -no MG Rover available-. They strongly suggested to produce a small hole in the thermostat as their experience with the Boxsters recommended. It was done and so far everything goes fine -fingers crossed-. |

Boxters are famous for head gaskets, but for some reason Porsche fans never seem to dwell on the subject - you can buy half a dozen Fs for the cost of one Boxter repair. |
