MG MGF Technical - Question for Mel - door pods
Hi Mel. Sorry to use your name here but have a question for you. Looking through the archive I see that a couple of years ago you were trying to paint or cover your MGF door pods. Did you ever succeed or did you replace altogether. I am now looking into doing something as well and wondered how you finished up. Kevin |

I'm not Mel, and the solution that I am posting here is not Mel's either - but Gareth managed to re-trim his Mk1 door pods in the Mk2 style. http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/DIY/interior/doorcard_TF_pods/index.htm I don't know what you have planned, but perhaps this is of some use? |

Hi, Kevin ,i did dye them black but the problem was the pattern on the cloth(fushion i think it is called)did not take on the fussy coloured bits if you know what i mean. You can get a new interior from a breakers for about £300 .. £350.00 or you can near me and this is what i ended up doing. I mainaged to get a leather (black and brg) seats, door pods, and steering wheel.£300.00 Rob adviced me on the fitting of the wheel ( Cheers). One thing i did do with a spare mk 1 door card was to strip the cloth off completely and sprayed the pod silver but that didn,t look right either. At the time i remembered looking at some leather covers at Mike Saturs site or browns and gammonds but i can,t remember which one they were about 70.00 for a pair. If you are thinking of covering them over with some material i may have the original cloth in the fushion pattern in the loft you could use as a template ,let us know how you get on ...Cheers Mel.. |

Thanks Mel, When you sprayed the pod silver did you mask it all out or does the pod come off of the door card? It's one piece isn't it? My interior is red and black and so therefore I just want to get the pods a shade of red - not flat and bright like leather. I don't actually mind the material pattern just need a red tint effect somehow. K |

IMO your best bet would be to get some red upholstery vinyl. Remove the existing material (this is doddle, even with the door card still insitu)Then use the now removed "fusion" fabric trim as a template, cut the vinyl to shape. Use a spray contact adhesive (mask off the rest of your door card)to fix the vinyl to your door cards. I would estimate no more than an hour from start to finish. |

Hi Kevin,i masked it out and sprayed it. It is all one piece (part of the door card). The later mk2 and tf are removable unfortunately not the mki . I think Gareth,s idea is what i would opt for if i did it again. The material didn,t seem to like the dye i used ,the spray job i did was cack. I looked into material prior to the mk2 interior i bought and there was loads to choose from at just one local market.I seem to recall that the fusion fabric pattern would not take the dye on the silver and green lines as they seemed water proof, the background was ok but over all it was not right . Good luck mate let us all know how u get on. Mel... |

Just thought I would quickly let you know what course of action I took re door pods. As I said before I actually like the MK1 F door pod cloth material just didn't want the green tint / colour anymore. All the interior is now black and red do I grabbed my Magic Markers (felt pens). The black remains black but the tint of green goes to tint of red and they look great. Rubbed with a cloth to rub in and remove excess. Am well pleased and they shall do for a while. Kevin |
