MG MGF Technical - Rattle or Knock!
My car has developed a really REALLY annoying rattle or more of a knocking sound from what seems 2 be under the drivers dash. It does it at low speed but not on big bumps which is odd, its like something knocking against metal or a loose screw banging around. Ive looked up inside as much as i can and taped a few things up which i thought might of been it but no luck, has anyone else had anything similar? I have other little rattles and squeaks which is understandable in a soft top but this one really stands out and its doin my head in. |

Have you looked at the wiper blade mechanism under the bonnet, as that was my problem. The bolts were about to come away. I now have another knocking noise, when I'm driving over spead humps and general bumps in the road, which I think is the shockers, going into the garage next week. Cars still under warranty luckily. Good Luck |

If it's an older MGF, then see for cross member bar creaks. (Location RH weld to the body) If it's a newer, then see for cross member bar creaks at the steering wheel mounts. Any MGF or mgtf may have weldline troubles at the vertical sheet metals below the wiper section. (My 99 made had) Which age is it and which VIN ? This beside of the useful hints from Linda. this may be a daft idea, but I had the same and it turned out to be the light under the bonnet had come loose, made a hell of a racket, even turning the stereo up didnt drown it out :) |

... one other may be the bonnet lid hinge. Now really off, CU. |

Thanks, im starting to run out of idea's, i hope its nothing to do with suspension or anything, i feel abit silly taking to the garage and saying "ive got a rattle" i will check the things that you guys suggested. Gary |

I have EXACTLY the same problem as you Gazza. Don't worry, help is at hand. I am waiting for a reply from elsewhere and I will post it here with an answer. Someone (Mark, are you there?) has had the problem before and fixed it costing £2 and 30 minutes of his time. Hopefully he'll get back to me with the specifics soon!! Neil |

My knocking problem turned out not to be the shockers, going back to the garage on Tuesday. But what I did check, was the tyre pressures. 4 new tyres were fitted 6 weeks ago (when I bought the car) and they were about 8lb over inflated. I think they should be 26 front and back according to my local tyre garage, (1.8i 99T) Continental tyres. Knocking noise isn't as frequent but still there. |
