MG MGF Technical - Real world K&N Results
Here are some real world figures to show the difference a K&N 57i filter makes to an other wise standard 1.8i. I have used base figures as published on the net. The following are speeds in MHP in 5th gear. rmp 2.5k 3k 3.5k 4k 4.5k 5k Base 55 66 77 88 99 111 K&N 58 70 81 94 105 119 There were two people in the car and luggage for a weekend away. The revs just wanted to go even higher but my wife did not. Hope this answers some of the questions I have seen in the past. Enjoy |

There's something not quite right here. At 3000 rpm your MGF will do the same speed regardless of whether a K&N is fitted. It doesn't alter the gearing or the size of the wheels as far as I am aware. |

Stephen, my 1.8I indicates the same speeds as yours with my k&n fitted, as it did without the K&N. I don't know about the base figures, perhaps they're corrections for our speedometer error. The speed achieved in any gear verus RPM will be directly related to gear ratio, not power. The K&N does make my car rev to higher engine speeds more freely, and I feel this may be an indication of greater power, but it's still subjective. K&N filters are widely used on just about any make of performance car in the world, and in many cases they have been accurately measured, and shown to increase power significantly. I have no doubt there is a reasonable power increase with one fitted, and I'm sure someone has already measured it's effect on an MGF accurately. |

The answer is the speeds in the documentation are real, the speed measures you have used Stephen are off the speedo. By law the a car's speedo cannot understate the speed so manufacturers overstate both the be on the safe side of the law and make their customers feel better about their purchase! Cheers Patrick |
