MG MGF Technical - Replacement K&N pipes?
Having run without the pipes for quite a while (yep, they kept grounding out and got mushed!) I have decided to put some back on as I really do think they make a difference! What piping should I replace them with and where can I get it? Cheers Richard |

A few months ago I bought a 'hot-air-pickup tube' from a autoshop. Those pipes are normally used to get hot air from above the exhaust manifold to the airfilter/carb. But, it's possible to pull these things to up to 1m. Different sizes are available. Hope this helps a bit, Erik |

I think you can also buy similar pipes from DIY shops. Cheers, Daniel. |

Maybe you can re-use the original ones from the K&N kit. Mine were badly damaged from grounding and when I installed Tom Randell's bracket, I just stretched the pipes and cut the damaged section (3 or 4 inches) ; after that, they looked like new. HTH, Fabrice |

I have for other reasons adapted an air scoop to induce more airflow through the engine bay. (Engine bay temp thread some time ago) This appears to be working although the crap weather has made my temp measuring comparisons to variable so I wait for better weather. However the principle is quite sound and if you look at the products from Demon Tweeks and similar companies, you will find moulded air scoops, mainly for brake cooling. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have a convenient pipe stub (or 2 stubs in some cases) on the back to attach flexible pipe. The flexible pipe is also sold in various diameters and would be ideal as an alternative to the K&N pipes. In fact you will find that the materials are the same! Remember to allow a gap between the filter and the pipes otherwise you will potentially direct water into the filter. A gap allows the water to 'drop out' of the airflow before getting to the filter. Thanks for the advertising Fabrice good to hear it fitted okay with your damaged pipes. If any one is interested in a bracket take a look at Rob's web page. I still have quite a few, but once they are all sold I will not be making any more. http://www.crosswinds.net/members/~mgfgallery/bracket/bracket.htm Tom |

Roger, I have been wondering if someone could produce a scoop to fit in place or as part of the side air intake. As the air intake is a bit of an odd shape it would be unlikely I would be able to adapt one myself. Please give details :-) |

I hope Rog won't mind me answering for him, but the scoop he mentions is an MR2 scoop that was fitted to Mk2 MR2s to presumably improve engine bay cooling. Really neat solution, not terribly expensive, and it fits on an MGF! We shall have to wait and see whether Rog's testing pans out well! Regarding the side vent as a scoop, unfortunately, they don't work this way :o( Wrong shape and profile. Connect one up to a K&N style cold air duct and absolutely no air will flow towards the filter. K&N and Ramair have tested cars and found this, and a group of us have video images from a moving car to demonstrate the airflow, or rather, lack of, through that grille. However... if you had a sealed air filter system connected to that vent, you might be on a winner. Slow moving air is at higher pressure than fast moving air- and in fact our video footage seems to suggest that the grille area may be a high pressure point despite the lack of air flow into the engine bay... I've now seen a couple of solutions using these vents- one with a filter actually built into the vent, and another that Roger uses where the standard air box is plumbed into the vent. After chats with Rog, there may be a 'third way'... I'll hopefully get time to work on this in the new year, and I'll let anyone who is interested know... BTW on the Lotus forum, there's someone selling cheap, ITG alternative airboxes... can't recall the cahaps name... Browse through the Elise BBS- I think under one of the '160 airbox threads' IIRC Rob |

Er' Rob, hence the idea of fitting a scoop (in place of the grill) so that more air is forced into the air intake... Sorry, I must be speaking Dutch :-) |

Sorry Tony- I wasn't quite sure as to whether that was what you meant- but I see what you mean. Mike's F-One kit modifies the profile around the grille significantly, to the extent that the engine cooling fan never switches on in his experience... Possibly not quite the mod you had in mind. Perhaps the SuperSports chrome style items? No idea as to their effectiveness I'm affraid. Better alternative may be to alter the shape of the duct orfice to mimick the NASCAR duct? Rob |

I wonder if the grills are strong enough to take a sort of clip on scoop? God I wish I could draw... |
Tony Smith |
Couldn't you use the existing mounts Tony? The ones that the self tapping screws for holding the whole cowl/grille assembly screw into... Should be man enough for the job I'd have thought. Rob |
Rob Bell |
I will think about it, not number one on my priority list :-). Now I wonder if Mike will paint a couple of the supersport intake surrounds green for me?... |
Tony Smith |
Or better still, have him make some cheaper fibre glass replicas... Rob |
