MG MGF Technical - Replacement panel filter now available for the TF

I just saw on their website that Green (www.greenfilters.com) now have a replacement panel filter for the TF, beating K&N to it! Part number is P950375.

I have no experience of Green filters, but I suppose that they are equivalent to the K&Ns, since they are made according to the same principles (i.e. cotton gauze sandwiched between two layers of steel mesh).

I thought the TF filter is the same as the F Trophy filter, and I also thought that K&N already produced a Trophy replacement element. I may be wrong - it has been known!

I don't know if the Trophy airbox was like the F's or the TF's, but it is a fact that the TF airbox is bigger than the regular F airbox. Up until now, there was no aftermarket replacement panel filter for the bigger 'box and Green seem to be the first company to offer one.

My experience with a similar K&N replacement filter in a Lotus Elise (same engine and airbox as the regular F) was that the power gain was marginal but that the throttle response was greatly improved.

It would be interesting if one of you guys going to the planned BBS rolling road day in a TF (was it later this year?) could bring a Green TF panel filter to update Rob's filter test of a few year's back...

I have a K&N replacementpanel filter in my F and at first found little difference in performance. But after modifying the box to give it cold air intake from the LHS air hole the difference was amazing. I belive that Robs original filter test did not include this mod.

You are quite right Jason, it didn't - which just shows how long ago it was when we performed them!!!

I have some RR data that Bruno sent me of this mod, and yes, the power gains are indeed impressive! (see http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/alternative_filter_options.htm)

What's better though - a cone in an airbox or a panel filter in a standard airbox but with a direct cold air feed? An interesting question! I suspect that the advantage will lie with the cone filter option - but it could be close.

Hmnn spent some time in a scrappie over the W/E, and chanched accross a rover 820 with airbox, it's pretty huge isn't it!
Didn't buy as I have other things to get ATM (and redundancy looms (and Becky might have written off the F)) but there is a 820 airbox with my name on it!

Fairly Will! LOL - but fractionally smaller than the ITG.

I hope that you find a new job soon mate - and get the F fixed - it would be a tragic way to leave the F fold otherwise!

Rob,

I tend to agree with you if by better you mean more power, but there are other issues - cost is one, but another is the "standard" look of a car with the modified box.

Jason - good points :o)

Mind you, the 820 airbox option is pretty price competitive: 5 quid from a scrap yard, plus 20 quid for a generic cone filter. Then you need to purchase some flexible, wire supported hose (20 to 30 quid) and job done - say 50-60 quid all in?

Standard airbox mod - well, the airbox is free. The panel filter will cost about 20 quid. You'll need some ducting. Cheap ali chimney stuff from B&Q or Wickes will probably do (100mm is what, 20 ish quid?) or the same stuff ordered for the 820 option. So about 40-50 quid complete then.

Not that much in it.

But if you are after a standard look, then the standard airbox option is clearly the way to go. It is also fractionally cheaper, and probably the easier to put together.

No wrong choice really, is there? Go for the one that suits you best. :o)

Trophy and TF list the same standard filter elements.
