MG MGF Technical - Rev it UP!
Due to the unbelievable amount of rain in the past two weeks, I am quite certain that the humidity, or actual water in the engine compartment must have something to do with this: When driving in the rain, I roll to a stop, and the engine starts to rev up on its own, sometimes it is just a fast idle of aroud 1500-2000 rpm, but sometimes it keeps climbing, and have had it running 3500rpm at the stop lights with no foot on the pedal. A quick stap of the accelerator stops this, but with the next press, it feels as if it is then sticking, and needs a little extra nudge to move the pedal. This happens occasionally when it is not raining, but 90% of the time it is when the rain is coming down pretty heavily. Any ideas? |

ahh, I had this too a few times (sigh) this is yet another common mgf problem discussed a zillion times already on this bbs in various threads: stepper motor goes funky bananas. Needs testbook retuning, if this doesn't help replace solenoids. If this doesn't help replace temp sensors. If this doesn't help, check butterfly throttle body assembly (grease it) & replace if necessary. If this doesn't help replace accelerator cable. If this doesn't help replace pedals. If this doesn't help sell the car asap ;) |

Dirk is technically correct, though perhaps somewhat pessimistic in his response - (I guess from his experience it is inevitable!) Search the archives there are several threads about this, and as far as I remember, it's usually just a gunked up cable.. Rich |

Or stepper motor - check archives and/or FAQ. BTW if you have 'got it' Dirk will have 'had it'. Bit like a certain woman I know (no not my wife) what ever ailment you have she has had it! The other day I told her I had prostate problems .... Ted |

feel lucky Ted that you didn't have ALL of these problems, as I had almost all of the recurring problems posted here on the BBS, with exception of fueltank-smell issue. So those who don't know me will understand why MG is for me the worst carbrand I have ever experienced ;) |

James, have you taken the car to either Canberra Star or Rolfe Classic to let them have a look at the problem? I had a similar problem about 12 months ago when it occured off an on. Rolfe seemed to fix it because I've not had any problems since. Out of interest James, what F do you have? Have you thought about joining the MG Car Club of Canberra? If you're interested, here's the web page where you can get more info. http://users.cyberone.com.au/brucek/mgcc/index.htm Cheers, Phil |

If it's the stepper motor, chances are it's not broken and you can reset it, instructions are somewhere on the FAQ. Can't remember the details, but it's as easy as pushing a pedal. If you have a cone air filter sometimes the throttle linkage can snag on the pipe. The cable can snag in various places, but I have never had the problem (4 years in September). Naturally with Dirks evil car, it jammed the throttle open nearly killing him a couple of times. Maybe Dirk should have called his car Christine? Any news from the new happy owner, Dirk? |

Christine?? Do you mean Christine Keeler? Dont think she killed anyone and if she did they probably died with a huge grin on the face. Ted |

No, Ted, I mean the possesed car from the Movie. |

Based on a Stephen King novel, directed by John Carpenter, released 1983, stars a red 1958 Plymouth Fury. Ralph |

Phil: I have a 1997 F in BRG, with a BRG Hard top as well. I have thought of joining the club, but I am pretty busy :o) Anyone else here from Canberra or Australia? I am going to be ordering a K&N filter from UK, and would like to double up with some one else to help with the shipping. |

Oh yeah, it is a VVC model as well I just discovered that the right rear corner of the car is sagging :o( looks like I have the dreaded busted Hydragas unit. |

Water in the electrics affects all engine managment systems, even those expensive million dollar plus machines at Le (wet) Mans!! careful and complete drying out is needed. Then to reset the system swithc on ignition and rapidly operate the throttle 5 times to it's maximum extent and then start the engine with your foot completely away from the throttle. Allow the engine to gently warm at a controlled idle. If after two attempts at this and the idele speed is still not returning to normal then the likelyhood is that water still remains in the system and providing an electrcial path for current where it shouldn't be so go dry some more. Ultimately a Testbook reset may be needed. Rog |
