MG MGF Technical - Rev problems...

Don't have much time to find this problem (4 nights before italy) So feel free to pump in suggestions of problems or diagnosis tests.

Problem is:

engine will not rev above 4~5 k without stuttering (feels like an inprecise rev limiter)

gear doesn't seem to make much diffrence and Cambs is so flat I can't really tell if load makes any diffrence

Diagnosis/done so far (all no change):
Changed all igntion parts, leads, plugs arm and cap

Cleaned HT stud on coil

Switch cleaner on all plugs

Fan comes on and off when expected, so the water temp sensor is fine

occurs only at high RPM -> rules out alarm cutting in

Options left:

could be the hall sensor, not sure of an easy way to test this, nor why it should fail

Could be lack of fuel pressure, again, not sure of how to test.

The problem is compounded by the engine being a newish fit into a midget (ran fine in the last midget but was off the road for about 2 years).

So, ideas?

Will Munns

For the observant,

The K has a variable reluctance sensor, not hall effect.

I think these are even more resilient, has anyone had one fail (as in - changing it fixed the problem - not "well mate, the sensor was def bust, but we had to replace everything else as the other bits were also broken")
Will Munns

Fuel filter or pipework (as it sounds a bit custom)?
Charless

a little custom to be sure :)

and fuel filter may be the problem - I fitted a new one after the pump, but not a new one on the low pressure side, and it was quite black and furry.

Fingers crossed for the testdrive
Will Munns

yup, fuel filer - done
Will Munns

I can't remember the age of your K-series Will - pre-2001? If there is a dizzy, then I'd replace the cap and rotor arm as a matter of course, but since you don't mention it, I wonder whether you have a later EU3 engine?
Rob Bell

Ah Dr Bell - you need better eyes :)

I changed all the HT parts first, problem was the (second) fuel filter.

Damn ringing in my ears that said "if it seems like a fueling problem 90% of the time it's electrical". Turns out twas in the 10%, but there is no harm in replacing those bits!
Will Munns

Ah - so you did! ;o) LOL

The engine bay filter mounted on the near side?
