MG MGF Technical - Rolling Road session - interested?

There's been a lot of discussion about rolling road sessions on recent threads - see 'M3D with VVC' and 'Performance Upgrades'.

If you're interested in spending a day with your car at Emerald rolling road in South London in November or December then please email me.

See http://members.aol.com/emeraldm3d/ for details on Emerald.

If there's enough interest, I'll try to organise something.

Dave
Dave

Hi Dave,

Yes I'm interested. It's about time we all quantified our return on investment. :-)

You have mail.

P.
Paul Nothard

Count me in

just name the time and place !!

Cheers Dave

STU

p.s. You back on the road yet?
Stu

Stu,

Great - no not yet - hopefully end of next week.

Paul,

No email in sight yet, but great to hear you're up for it too. What dates can you NOT make.

Here's the interest list so far:

Rob Bell
Tim Woolcott
Paul Nothard
Stu Dickens
Jerry Flint
Nick Young
Dave Livingstone

Looking good!

Dave
Dave

Are rolling roads good for your car? Surely giving your engine a good licking without good airflow is asking for overheating in all sorts of places? Oooerr.
Jodi

Not available Nov 22-24.
Available most other dates.

P.
Paul Nothard

Difficult for me to say a date as my work takes me abroad at very short notice, but once you have a general consensus of a suitable date I should hopefully be able to book the day off but I need a couple of weeks notice ideally !

Hope we can get this sorted !!

STU
Stu

Not available 2/11 or 5/11 - but other dates okay at the mo'

:o)
Rob Bell

Thanks Stu,

Paul - got your email.

Latest:

Rob Bell (not 2/11 or 5/11)
Tim Woolcott (not between 31/10 and 3/11)
Paul Nothard (not 22 to 24/11)
Stu Dickens (hopefully anytime given 2 weeks notice)
Steve Riches (not Nov 12/13 or Dec 11)
Jerry Flint (need dates you can't do)
Nick Young (any Saturday except 2/11)
Dave Livingstone (anytime)

Looking good.

Dave
Dave

I think you should ensure you have a mixture of various F's and TF's so we really have some data to stick our teeth into.
T.E.D.

South london is a bit far for me, were you getting anything "interesting" done in the end then Dave?
Kingsley

Yeah, sorry Kingsley - it's just that most of the original interested parties seemed to live in the South-East and Emerald, in South London, sounded a good fit. They are also, of course, the suppliers of the M3D programmable replacement for MEMS which will make for interesting conversation.

Since my HGF, the car was picked up by TechSpeed. The cyclinder head (VVC) went off to Dave Andrews who is currently working on a full port/gas flow. Hence the interest in the RR from me. Once Dave has finished, the head will go back to TechSpeed, who will rebuild the engine. I hope to get the car all back together towards the end of next week.

Dave
Dave

Np Dave.
I'll be very interested to see your results, will you be sticking with mems? or upgrading? DTH throttle bodies ? :D
Kingsley

Kingsley,

The bill from the HGF plus porting will be hefty enough. MEMS should cope I'm told. The way forward should I ever decide to do more would be to ditch the VVC and go for the Piper cam solid conversion plus M3D ECU. DTH Throttle bodies - I guess ultimately, but I'll probably never get that far!

Dave
Dave

Now we are ten:

Rob Bell (not 2/11 or 5/11)
Tim Woolcott (not between 31/10 and 3/11)
Paul Nothard (not 22 to 24/11)
Stu Dickens (anytime)
Steve Riches (not Nov 12/13 or Dec 11)
Jerry Flint (need dates you can't do)
Nick Young (any Saturday except 2/11)
Mike Pollard (need dates)
Chris Marshall (not 1,6,7,8,12,15,18,19 Nov or 6,9,16 Dec)
Dave Livingstone (anytime)

Dave
Dave

Healthy entry list there Dave :o)

Quite a range of specs too...
Rob Bell

Please let me know the date of your proposed emerald session and I will try to sneak down to smoggy London Town for the day.
Just to let you all know the oil leak was fixed by Mike S. at the weekend, not the VVC unit but a wrongly cut cam cover gasket, befor anyone tells me it was on upside down or back to front, I can assure you it was not!
I do not know what the BHP or torque figures will be for this particular conversion, but it is very nice to drive and much, much quicker than when it was in standard form with it's K&N.
For those who have not met me the MG stands for Mad Geordie, if and when we do meet me, you will know why!
Dave you have mail!
Paul have you moved and got those brakes fitted in your 15" rims?
MGTerry

Talking about the range of specs, I am not familiar with all yours ?

For the record mine is:-

97 MGF VVC

52mm throttle body
Moto-build performance exhaust
Moto-build Chip (piggy back type)
Piper cross Viper (carbon air box)filter

Thats about it on the engine front !!

Cheers all

Stu
Stu

My car:

'96 MPi
- Mike Satur Imola exhaust
- K&N 57i cone filter in a Rover 820 airbox

And, hopefully soon

- a 4-2-1 extractor exhaust manifold

Not much I grant you - but all I'm allowed to get away with in the standard class of the MGCC sprint championship ;o)
Rob Bell

Hmm 4-2-1 that'll be interesting
Kingsley

My '97 VVC has standard engine/transmission apart from K&N.

Steve
Steve

What is the cost?
Jason H
Jason H

Rob,

Never thought I'd get excited but an exhaust manifold but a 4-2-1 Mmmm......I wanna see that :o)

Tim
tim woolcott

My car:

. Peter Burgess flowed head
. KnN
. 52mm throttle body

Brakes: (for the Mad Georgie! :o)
Yes, I've moved house and I did manage to get the brakes fitted in time. <phew> They are a bit of a fiddle to fit, but once fitted they work very well. *Still* not abused them enough to comment fully, but I'd say already that it's money well spent.

Paul Nothard

Hi Dave

Not seen this thread before, count me and can do it most dates except 9/11.

Std 1.8i
ITG Maxogen filter
Miltek sports exhaust.

Tom
Tom Randell

Hi Tom,

Is your car all OK now? What was the final chapter in the saga?

Thanks for your interest in the RR session. That makes at least 12 maybe 13 of us. Hope that's not an unlucky number and that Emerald can accomodate us. I've just started the enquiries on that one.

I'll get back to everyone, once I have some news on dates and costs.

Dave

MGF VVC
ITG Maxogen
52mm Throttle Body
Phoenix Exhaust
DVA full ported head (in progress)
Dave

Nice one Dave :o)
Rob Bell

Dave,
I'm another possible - VVC with 52mmTB, modofied airbox with K&N panel and cold air intake.
Jason H
Jason H

Hi Jason,

Yes I got your email this morning - you should have a reply from me - you are in the number I mentioned.

Will keep everyone posted.

Dave
Dave

Dave,

Yep car still going but as for what the final chapter in the saga was I don't have a clue except complete wireloom change and ecu.

Tom
Tom Randell

I may be interested ... can't do December 7th-13th inclusive.

MGF VVC '96
MS back box
Trophy TB
Hurricane Induction System

Gaz

Sounds like a landmark event for the F that's too good to miss. Will make a concerted effort to attend!!!

'96 VVC
Now:
K&N Filter
Mike S S/S Exhaust
FSE PBV
De-Cat
Coming Soon...
Piper X Viper Induction Filter
Mike S Stage II VVC Tune
Magnicor Ignition Leads

Steve
Steve Jones

Oh, and 52mmTB *;-)
Steve

I have a 52mm TB to fit - so if there is time, I'll do a before and after RR run on my car :o)

Hopefully this will confirm Roger's results with the VVC engine as installed on a BRM in a 1.8 MPi in an F!
Rob Bell

I've just sent an email to everyone who has expressed interest with an update on the plan. It includes an attachment showing all the specs of the cars. We should have a fascinating day.

If anyone hasn't received my email please let me know. We're now looking at a Sunday in December (1st, 8th or 15th).

Cheers,

Dave
Dave

Dave,

Won't be able to make this but would be very interested to see the results. Look forward to everyone's reports from the day. Have a good one!

Jim
Jim

Jim,

No problem.

Thanks,

Dave
Dave

What, no TFs......?
T.E.D.

Tony (T.E.D.),

Yes, were doing tremendously well for variously modified Fs. We even have at least one each of the various Z cars, but currently no TFs amongst the 17 people interested.

We could do with a few absolutely standard cars as a comparison, as I think that all of the Fs presently interested have at least a K&N. A standard F, TF and Trophy would do nicely. Anyone?

Dave
Dave

Any cost involved? And can someone answer the Q about rolling road being bad for a your car as theres no airflow to keep it cool???

Ian
tf160 KJ52 SXE
Ian

Rolling roads usually have a big mobile fan which they place in front of the car to provide airflow to your radiator.

Bruce
Bruce Caldwell

Cost is probably going to be about £25 per power run.

Dave
Dave

>>>Are rolling roads good for your car? <<<

Jodi,

Yes it is possible for extended periods of time will see unhealty temp rise in places which would not normally be so hot. The large fan which is placed in front of the car moves a considerable amount of air, but will provide a degree of control mainly to engine temps. However, on the Emerald roller, the runs are done in a matter of seconds and there is next to no strain and certainly less than you could impose under many driving conditions.

Rob,

Ask Dave Walker to bring up the stored plots of the BRM, I think it has 'T31' as it's title.

BTW will someone ask Dave W if and when his move is happening?

Rog
Roger Parker

How much power can emeralds RR take?

Would anyone mind if i joined in?

Drew
Rover 220 turbo
Drew Spalding

Drew,

How much power so you think you've got ;-)

Drop me an email and I'll keep you in the loop on what's happening.

Cheers,

Dave
Dave

Roger,

Dave Walker is planning to move to Thetford, Norfolk. He'll hopefully know within two or three weeks when this will happen. So, our RR day may be in Brixton or it may be in Thetford!!

Things will likely go a little quiet on this until we find out. I have an email list of all interested parties (not all read this BBS) and will use this to keep everyone aware of developments.

Dave
Dave

Will do Rog :o)

Keep us posted Dave :o)
Rob Bell

Hi guys

I've just noticed that Autopoint have a rolling road workshop at Thetford !!

http://www.performancecartuning.net/

Wouldn't have thought there was enough business for two rolling roads in one town ?

Has anyone used Autopoint before ?

Stu
Stu

Hmm, well spotted Stu,

I wonder if Dave Walker knows he's moving next door to such competition!
