MG MGF Technical - Rust on panel behind passenger seat

Hello Everyone,

Looking for some advice please, had a thread on earlier regarding wet passenger side carpets. Have been dealing with this and the leak has been coming from the front bulkhead area.

However I have also stripped back all the carpet and insulation from behind the seats. The metal bulkhead behind the passenger side has started to rust. There has also been evidence of the carpet on the follr has been wet here in the past as well.

Anyone have experience of this problem? What are the likely causes everything around the petrol tank looks ok.

Any advice please would be greatly welcomed would like to get these all sorted out whilst the car is in bits now rather than having to take it apart again!!

By the way the car is a 1998 VVC Abingdon.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi,
Water can dribble down the rear of the door glass and accumulate in the well behind the seats and cause the rusting as you have described. Also the membrane behind the door cards could be damaged and water is running into the interior. When I first got my 96 F five years ago, I ended up removing the carpets and underfelt together with the door cards. I then put the seats back and drove the car like that until I was happy that I'd sorted all the leaks. The rear panel was removed and using a window box (from a garden centre) I soaked the bottoms of the panel in Bilt Hamber's Deox-C rust removing solution. After all the rust was removed I gave the panel (bottom) a couple of coats of their Hydrate 80 rust neutraliser. A coat of paint then finished the job. It would be worth lightly spraying the car with water around the suspect areas to see just where the problem(s) lie.
Hope this is of help.

The majority of MGFs will have corrosion here (They all do that Sir). Whether this is due to a leak, or simply the sound deadening material retaining moisture (atmospheric or otherwise) next to the metal I don't know...

Wet floors are so common on MGFs that they are hardly worth mentioning.. Water leaking at the front can get to the back. Like Willy I removed all the flooring until I had fixed the leaks - took about 6 months. Mine let water in through the body seams above my feet. Dreadful build quality.
