MG MGF Technical - Rust prevention in lower footwells
Is there anything I can use to coat the footwell panels to prevent rust formation. With all this heavy rain (and the possibility that it will now be a regular part of the climate) I get a little dampness every now and then. I'd like to make sure I can keep the areas rust free. Also is anyone else concerned about all those little spots that seem to collect water - under the bonnet and the under the fuel filler cap ... Gaz |

Gaz Use Waxoyl = finnigans - you can buy it in clear finish and brush it on footwells 5 litres £17.95 - it dries fairly solid and loses its odour after 3-5 days Has a rust inhibitor in it as well and its about the best stuff you can use - all classic car restorers use it inside and out - it is also good for underbody as it "creeps" if scratched but you will need to re apply yearly anywhere it may get worn - ie underbody and arches - very simple and quick - take about an hour to do the underbody with a brush - dont bother with the spray guns - there pretty useless It will mean stripping out the carpets and probably worth taking out seats so you can do the whole internal floorpan and any soundproofing - just lay a bin liner over the top when you finish to keep it from soaking into the carpet until it dries! Other areas worth doing are bonnet and boot lids - especially around the poorly sealed seams - inner door panels - especially bottom section - ensure you do not block water drain holes in bottom of doors! May even be worth brushing a light application on water pipes under the body and also bottom of radiator- although this would have to be very light coat and only bottom section where water gets trapped! Or take it to a specialist and they will do the whole job for you including injecting it into seals and tube sections that are generally not accessable |

I've noticed that water collecting under the fuel cap - damn annoying, should be a little drain hole there, has anyone addressed this problem?? Steve. |

On reading and writing on this subject I recalled that my heater hose had a slight leak which was fixed the leak had allowed water to drip into the driver side footwell Anyway - i thought i would go take a look tonight - so lifted the carpet - just a triangle section folded back under the accelerator and clutch Well - the car has only had dry use for the last 6 weeks - heater on etc so i would have expected any residue water to have dried by now Unfortunately MG use a nasty cheap sound deadening felt which has astounding water holding capacity - SAME STUFF AS used in the triumph spitfires 30 years ago! So anyway - I pulled this out - mine wasnt fixed without having to remove the carpet and its now on the washing line dripping! It does have two strips of foam to pad out the carpet and i will have to find something water proof to replace this or the carpet will pull out of the door seals WIPED OVER THE FLOORPAN -you can squeeze your arm under the carpet to get to it all and put a few foam cieling tiles under the carpet to allow a bit of air to circulate No signs of any corrosion - floorpan is well finished ! I am going to get some waterproof sound deadening if required - if not to loud i will leave the nasty stuff out and pull the passeger side out too Feels like there is some under the seats as well -so thats coming out also -YUCK iF IT IS TOO LOUD YOU CAN BUY SOUND DEADENING PANELS IN A RUBBER TYPE MATERIAL AND STICK THEM DOWN USING THE WAXOYL :) My OPINION is in a convertable you do not need or want a sponge under the carpet acting as a water trap ! |

>> Unfortunately MG use a nasty cheap sound deadening felt which has astounding water holding capacity ... Same here Tony ... carpet felt OK but after I lifted everything up the underlay and the black/charcoal sound deadening material were wet. I've pulled back the carpet and underlay, but I might pull everything out tomorrow. Fortunately I do know where my leaks are - just need to fix 'em. Gaz |
