MG MGF Technical - So many questions!
Hello all. I'm a new member to the site and fairly new to MGF's ( bought 1995 BRG 1.8i at the beginning of the year.....my fiance named her Milly! ) Have to say its the best buy I have ever made, epecially after years of buying golfs. I've got a couple of questions that I would appriceate help on : I think this topic has been covered loads but please endulge me. A couple of days ago the temp gauge next to the rev counter stopped working...it just lies there looking pathetic. There is no sign of the engine over heating or any dreaded head gasket faults. Could it be the sensor? Secondly, I'm planning on modifying the interior ( car has standard black cloth trim ), is it easy to fit leather seats in the F? Are second hand seats easy to find? Any other suggestions would be a great help..........then I'll get onto the exterior, I wonder if my bank will extend my overdraft? cheers, Ben |

Could be the sensor - but also could be the wire or plug. Remove the engine bay cover and the black sensor on the water pipe which is at the front in the middle of the engine bay is where to start looking. The seats are common for all years of F and TF - to change them you will need torx bits and to disconnet the battery for 20 mins before. |

Hi Ben, Welcome to the MGF world! Take a look in the "Darkside" section of the Central Scotland MGF site. http://www.csmgf.co.uk/ You'll see loads of ideas for the interior of your car. Sam |

Could it be the sensor? << As Will says, your diagnosis of a problem with the sensor is almost certainly correct - either with the sensor itself, or with the loom plug or the wiring itself. Possibly the easiest/cheapest thing to do first is to clean the electrical connections with contact cleaner. If that doesn't work, replace the sensor (pretty straightforward, and you'll not loose much coolant either - BUT never remove a sensor from a HOT engine: you'll scald yourself as pressurised coolant will be released. << Swapping seats and interior trim panels is easy - and fitting trim parts is straightforward. You can even swap the centre console to the latest type too if you want a MY2000/ TF look to the inside of your car... Some of the things you can do: Centre console swap: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/mk1_2_my2000_console.htm MY2000/ TF interior swap: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/BRM_concept.htm Hope this helps :o) |

Thanks for the input Sam/Rob. Not had a chance to get the engine bay cover off yet for a nose ( work gets in the way of so much fun! ). Now that I'm thinking about it the connection could be the problem as the gauge did rapidly dart up and down a few times before finally giving up the ghost. Thanks for the link Sam. It has got me thinking now! Should I ask my fiance to postpone our wedding using wedding cars tonbridge so I can get stuck into the car?.......could be more than my lifes worth. Are there any runs/clubs based up here in Aberdeen? We definately have the roads for it! Thanks again guys, Ben. |
