MG MGF Technical - Some more interesting pix of the TF
Here are some interesting pictures of some of the detail changes that have occured to make an MGF into an mgtf (thanks Rog). The pictures were taken in a local dealership, so don't expect any real expose images ;o) But the details are interesting. Some minor changes to the interior, the rear strut brace as seen through the engine inspection grille, the rear suspension, and perhaps the most interesting image, the front suspension turrets housing the damper units: http://www.mgf.4mg.com/TF_in_more_detail.htm As can be seen, the dampers are now mounted inboard of the old units, and a little further back in the chassis. What impact this alteration in positioning has upon the front suspension geometry, I am not sure, but the other observation is that there clearly been substantial reinforcement of the turrets to absorb the increased loads being directed to them via the coil over damper units (previously absorbed by the hydragas units in the subframes). I wonder what lies behind the front bulkhead shroud...? |

Very interesting pictures. Thank you for this first impression. The rear makes me almost curious. No lower control arms to the subframe. So they atached all to the front (inner area) of the frame. Only the roll bar looks like the old. LOL.. Carl will be amazed about new restrictions due to engine works :) I mean the braces. Complete different. |

Rob….thanks for posting the photos....it looks as if the engineering changes to the TF are quite extensive to accommodate the new suspension. I wonder if the braces restrict access to the engine and associated components in any way? I am not an F owner so this may seem like a silly question but I have to ask it in the web page you say >>>>carbon fibre inlays on the poor pods. What are poor pods? |

Guys, TBQH, I am not sure whether the new brace will interfere with engine access or not- that question can only be answered when someone removes the engine cover from one of these cars. However, one thing is for sure- it is no longer possible to change the air filter without removing the engine cover! Ian, it should read: "door pod"- which is the term applied to the trim insert on the door card: that area of leather surrounding the door handle. Thanks for pointing out the typo!!! ;o) I'll sort it now... |

those engine braces look a similar idea to those fitted to the MR2 roadster. It's a shame they didn't do anything different with the interior. makes upgrading hardly seem worthwhile |

Rob, a friend who runs a very succesful website on Freeserve came accross this problem, an easy solution is to have the pictures spread across many diffrent Freeserve instances- as the main page uses very little bandwidth. Freeserve refuse to incresse the bandwidth allowance or the website hosting size, instead recomending you do this. HTH Will |

Rob, why not ask Mike P. for some megs webspace. Finding any redirectory service for any short domain name is easy. I would have asked him already in last year, but didn't need, cause I found a german enthusiast working at Verio. I used his FOC 'employee benefit' with 350 megs space and got it increased up to 450 megs recently. ;) Anyway, I think Mike will do cheap. Cheers Dieter for the suggestion. I've e-mailed Mike, and I'll see what he thinks; he already has allocated me some space for the cartoon web page (sadly neglected in recent times- too busy with other projects!)... Plus, Stefan may be able to host the site on his server (ultimatemg.com), so I think that a move is a certainty. I think that the Dark-side web will move at the same time... :o) Which reminds me, I must get around to figuring out how to structure the site so it doesn't turn into a hideous monster! |

Well, wanted to see the pictures myself... but thanks to all of you... Robs site has exceeded the max. Anyway... Rob/Dieter are you still interested in some webspace. I am sure I could arrange something on my server so you could host some megs for free. But don't start asking about running CGI-scripts, .... don't know enough about that so.... just FTP-upload and http-browsing. cheers, |

Erik, what more then 450 MEGABYTE space ;) Just looked up the stats files. Required bandwith is 105,4MB each day (average). January was 3,260GB until now. Lowest month was November at mine with only 2,128GB. Rob, you should see for 2 GB/month minimum. LOL, I wonder whenever I will be able to link all the currently not linked stuff together .... the time will come :) >cgi script ???? Hmmm, is that more then 10 quid ? ;) |

Wow Dieter- that's impressive usage! I'm sure my site gets no where close- but in fact, I have no real way of knowing how much bandwidth is being used on my site at present- except when Freeservers - bless 'em - freeze the site until the end of the month. Erik, thanks, I don't need any more space. But Rob does currently. Rob, I think 1 Meg per month should be the bandwidth to go for then. Can't you just register a second account there under a different name and split the site ? In my worst time before I moved to the friends server at Verio I had about 15 different FOC accounts and lost at last the 'overview', but two different should be possible, even at the same provider. |

Just been browsing the web for webpage copiers. Most seem to be part of existing web sites- so yes, it should be perfectly possible to split the site- over two or more Freeserve sites (as Will suggested- thanks) or even onto other servers. Ideally I'd like to find a 'settled home' for the whole thing... but I guess I'll have to wait and see how this develops. :o) |

...and back to the original subject matter, the substantial S shaped casting is fixed at top and bottom of the rear hub carrier. It moves forward to a new mounting point on the front of the modified subframe. The original MGF cast lower arm is replaced by an adjustable less sturdy steel one which pivots from the same point in the subframe as the F lower arm and attaches at the bottom front side of the hub carrier. The original rear bar on the F is replaced by one that is over twice the length and follows a similar line from the rear lower part of the hub carrier, through a now opened up part of the subframe and to a pivot that is close to the centreline of the car. This link is also adjustable. On the upper part of the hub carrier a new cast upper arm connects from the original ball joint to a new pivot point and tower area from which the coil over is fitted. The shape of this casting is extended downwards in the centree section that not only makes it very strong, but allows a slightly lower bolt position for the damper lower mount. This gives a greater length for the damper and spring for greater suspension travel. Very neat really. On the engine acces point, yes there will be a slight degree of extra intrusion by the presence of the new S shaped casting when it comes to doing any blet work or alternator changes. A very informative demo subframe was present in Portugal which was MGF on the left side and TF on the right side. I have many photos of this but have to retain for the mo to provide support for a comprehensive feature I am writing for Enjoying MG. A bit like DK saying you have to wait for next edition of MG World! Sorry. Rog Rog |

Nice pic's, surprising amount of rust on rear suspension pics! salt on roads I suppose, the braces in the engine bay are they speckled or just rust spotted ? Mike |
