MG MGF Technical - Split bumper

Thanks to a thin road and a school run MPV with 4 kids and an inattentive driver I now have a 2" split in the rear bumper. My dealership say this needs a new bumper but surely there must be someone/someway to seal the split without it being visible

Any ideas anybody?

Don't understand the problem!

Silly cow in the people carry needs to buy you a new rear end. Lie back and enjoy the benefits of her insurance.

I supsect on closer inspection you may find the exhaust needs replacing as well!

Cheers

Patrick

PS more seriuos point. THe rear bumper is there to protect you. Would a cheap repair offer the same protection. I don't know but would not risk it if someone else is paying!
Patrick

Hi Folks,

Do we know if it was a lady driving the MPV or are we just promoting motoring BBSs as being male dominated?!?!?

Hi,

I just got my rear bumper replaced due to a low speed prang just before Christmas. They replaced the bumper panel and support brackets behind, all for the princely sum of £710 - paid for by the other bloke's insurance :o)

They also checked the interior panel which supports the little bits immediately below the light cluster as apparently this can be deformed by a rear bump and pushes the little panels in a bit.

Anyway - a teeny-weeny bump and nearly a grand to sort it out - eek. Just glad it wasn't me paying for it :o) The damage was minor but as Patrick said, I wanted it fixed properly to keep me safe, I don't think a patch is a good idea...

first bumper was almost invisible damage, the support brackets behind it were bend, causing the bumper to bend with it. replaced FOC by insurance
second bumper destroyed in 2 pieces thanks to idiot with towing hook trying to squeeze his 4x4 (?) into a place where he didn't have the place. replaced, I paid, since guy drove away without leaving message. Still a bump in plate behind bumper, plus destroyed SP exhaust support bracket replaced with selfmade bracket.
third bumper replaced FOC by Rover. Due to the new but misaligned bracket of the exhaust, bumper started to melt away.
now I hope this fourth bumper will be graceously destroyed by a moron who should drive into my F, so I can replace my SP exhaust again with good brackets and bump out the bent plate between boot & bumper for free...

I had this happen last year. I parked my car for just 5 minutes and went to buy some lunch. I returned to find someone had hit my car and left the scene leaving a similar split in the rear bumper.
It was replaced by my Rover dealer and cost between £600 and £700. As no one stopped to admit their 'mistake' it counted as a first strike against my protected no claims.
I was very pleased with the finished repair. I hope things work out for you.
Steve

Some dealers can perform electronic welding on plastic bumpers, depending on the extent of the damage. This works out far cheaper than a new bumper.

Sorry John don't want to appear as sexist but "school run and people carrier" sounds like we are talking girlies here!

Also I defend the use of the word cow as not being gender specific. I am sure you have all seem the Boddingtons cartoon adverts for their strange beverage. This would seem to suggest that Northerns think cows are male!

Silly boys in Marketing again.

Cheers

Steve,

£600 to £700 to replace a rear bumper!!

I'm getting my front bumper replaced, headlight replaced, dented wing and stratched bonnet sorted for £830. This includes respraying the bonnet, bumper and both wings.

Was there other damage?

Thanks for the advice, I've just moved house and lost her number (yes it was a female driver and whilst I try not to be sexist the quality of drivers delivering their offspring to local (mostly private) schools is abysmal and frequently dangerous, and the vast majority of them are female) so insurance is out of the question (I know I'm a fool).

Does anyone know which dealerships do the welding, the impact was <5mph and I really doubt there's any damage to the fixings?

Thanks again for all your input

Hi Phil,

Preists of Chesham (01494 784491) did some electronic welding and respray on my rear bumper after someone drove into my car in a car park.

The quality of the work was fantastic, I'd recommend you give them a call.

Cheers,

Daniel.

Ralph,

No other damage. I can't remember the exact price -too painful! I only had to pay the first part anyway. I was not claiming this to be a bargain in any way, just the price paid to repair damage at a main dealer as was requested. The quality of the work was first rate and the insurance company happy to pay the balance.
Steve

I'd replace the bumper. Probably the best bet is to buy a second hand bumper (ideally in the same colour as your own, but you could get it resprayed).

I know of someone with a couple of rear bumpers: one black the other red. No idea how much they're being sold for, but I could put in touch with him if you're interested?
