MG MGF Technical - Squeeky Centre Console
The centre console (if that is the right word, being the trim that runs from the gearshift surround up to the air vents) on our Mk2 MGF continuously squeeks. If I apply pressure the noise stops but I'd love to stop it permanently. I was thinking of removing it and packing some foam behind. Would this work or is there a better way? How do I even get the thing off? And how much would a silver replacement be? |

I guess they all squeek, then :-) |

No mine doesn't squeek. Not sure how to get it off - try Rob Bell or Dieter's site ( you'll get links at http://www.csmgf.co.uk ) Try Victoria at MGF Centre for cost of silver replacement. |

Adrian, Have a look at............ http://www.apttony.co.uk/Servicing/CentreConsole.html to see how to remove the centre console Tony |

Tony, Adrian has a Mk2 fascia, it is similar but there are some important differences. Begin by removing the your stereo head unit, then remove the gear knob, this will either unscrew or require a grub screw to be released. The next step is to remove the alumnium ring around the gear gaiter, this just clips in place. Unlike the Mk1 fascia, the Mk2 is held in place with only three clips, a pair at the top each side of the dials and a big main one at the bottom. The bottom one is easy to break, release it carefully, but firmly and then pull the fascia out of it's recess to release the top two. Reach behind the facsia and unplug the multiplugs to the switches and the clock/oil temp guage. Unplugging the clock/oil temp guage and hazard light switch is easier if you remove the top air vent and reach in through here - the air vent just pulls out (be firm). You should now be able to slide the fascia up and over the gear lever - job done. SF |

Thanks for that Guys - I'll certainly give it a go. Got a feeling that I'd best get a silver replacement from Victoria first, and then wait 'til I get some free time in dry daylight. Which could be june. Is it usual for these to squeek so much? Mine has around 5mil of for-aft free play around the switches which doesn't feel right to me. |

Well spotted SF - you got my deliberate mistake in one! :-) Sorry Adrian. Tony |

Adrian, I spent a good hour this weekend "felting" the behind of my centre console and it did mostly cure it.. First, off came the centre console (using the diagrams from my RAVE cd - if you haven't got one... get one) then I basically bought some thin sticky back felt from a shop and everywhere the two bits met (console and dash) I put on a bit of the felt on the dash part - mainly all around the edge. I also put very thin strips on the bits behind the console where it sits on the heater controls. Finally the gearstick gaitor came off and I put a layer between that and the base of the centre console. If I get a chance over the next couple of days I'll take some photo's of my work and post them to you. I also read in the archives that spraying some Teflon Spray on the areas where the parts meet can also cure this... I'm going to try this tonight... let you know in the morning. Essentially, I've got so fed up with squeeks and rattles in the interior that I'm going to work on every single one until they're all sorted :-) then write a diary about how I did it! :-) Cheers Chris |

Chris, so nice solutions for the squeeks! However, if you are going to write about each squeek you resolve i fear war and peace maybe in danger regarding the word count ;-)! Be interested to know what happens with the teflon spray! |

Rob, It was raining last night so I stayed indoors and didn't do any "de-sqeaking"... no new news to report ;-) But I've still got the Teflon spray armed and ready... If this weather continues, it's going to be parked in the lounge through the patio doors :-) Chris. |

I have just fitted a MK2 centre console last night and it had five mounting points not 3. 2 were attached to the clock/oil temp gauge frame which screwed into the console itself, 2 were at the bottom left and right below the heater gauges and one at the base of the gear gaitor ring. The console used all of the existing mounting points that the MK1 had. Fits perfectly and no squeaks, so is it possible that you are missing some mounting clips from the console which in turn would allow movement and subsequent squeaks. |

By the way Sprayed mine Audi Aluminium Silver, cost £10 for Primer, Lacquer and Paint from halfords (3 for 2)did the air vents too and it looks fab. I am thinking of doing the cowl and windscreen vents to match too. |

Thanks for that info, Chris, Chris, Rob et al. Did you get any photos at all? If so, my email is fowlesa *at* remington.co.uk. I have to say I do suspect a missing clip or two - or perhaps my ears have got too sensitive as a result of driving my "japanese BMW"! |

Sorry I did not take pictures but the lugs are attached to the gauge golding bracket top left and right and just to the left and right of the lower recess, cubby hole. These lugs push into blue clips in the dash board surround. There is also a plastic clip on the front leading edge of the gear gaitor ring housing which clips under the tunnel surround. I suspect some of the lugs or blue clips are missing because my console feels very secure and is not squeaking at all. It does fit quite tightly and was difficult to push into place, I had to use some force to get the lugs to snap into the clips. |
