MG MGF Technical - SRS

I assume my problems is much discussed issue on this site.

The "SRS" light stays on since a few days. I've read somewhere it may have have to do with the wiring to the seat. But what should I check, replace or look for?

Freek

Have a look under the seat and check to see if the yellow sheathed wiring to the seatbelt pretensioners has come undone - there's a connector which can be pulled apart when you move the seat. If it is, disconnect the battery for 20 minutes before reconnecting it just to be on the safe side.

My SRS light come on for the summer months then goes off for the winter..... possibly temperature related me thinks...!

The SRS light is rigged to both the air bags and the seat belt pre-tensioners. Quite frequently the coupler under the seat becomes detatched. Have a look under the seat and you should see a coupler clipped to the underside of the seat with (I think ) black and yellow wires coming from it.

Alternatively the other common fault is the rotary coupler in the steering wheel. This is the fault I have. and really the only cure is replacement of the rotary couple. a rather expensive item I'm afraid for what it is.

The car is safe to drive with the SRS light on, however, it is telling you that the system has gone into fail safe and so the airbag/tensioners will not fire during a crash, so you may want to have this seen to.

NOTE: Great care should be taken if playing with the safety aspects of the car. These contain explosives. Any work carried out must be done after both terminals have been disconnected from the battery for at least 15-20 minutes.

Another question about SRS :

Is there a way to put the passengers airbag off (like on peugeots) when you put a children-seat on the passengers seat ?
BV Bruno

BV,

The question of turning off the passenger airbag has come up before. Unfortunately there is no way to turn is off except for complete removal. MGR dealerships seem particularly reluctant to do this for some reason.... :o(

>>My SRS light come on for the summer months then goes off for the winter..... possibly temperature related me thinks...!<<

Were you joking about this Tim? I only ask as my SRS light has been coming on recently, but only on days when the weather's been scorchio. I had been thinking myself that it could be temperature related.

I haven't moved my seat in god knows how long, as I'm the only driver, so don't see how the wiring connection could have come loose.

We know that if the wiring is disconnected whilst there is power in the system, there is a (small) chance that the airbags/pretensioners could fire.

Given the above, fitting an isolation switch for the passenger airbag could cause the airbag to fire when operated (small chance, due to wiring effectively being diconnected whilst still 'live').

Going out on a limb here but here goes... :-)

I had a thought about this the other day, i was wondering if it would be possible to mount the passenger airbag on a revolve around the windscreen brace inside the dash. You could then spin it around the bar away from you (maybe have a blank on the revolve too) so that if it went off it would inflate harmlessly inside the dash. Beleive it or not, this is one of the 'more sensible' ideas i have come up with during the stripdown of Scarlet! :-)

Mine used to come on in the rain. it was the rotary coupler which becomes intermittent after a few years
