MG MGF Technical - SRS light stays on

Hi,

From time to time (it happened twice in the last 3 months, last time was yesterday), the SRS light stays on. I must stop, cut off the engine and start it again.
I didn't check the manual yet but I presume I would not find a lot in there.
Is there any special check with the airbag to be done (by the dealer during servicing)
FYI, it's a 97 mpi with 80,000km on the clock and airbag in the steering wheel only (no passenger airbag)

Do you know what it means?

Testbook should show up the fault!

Jerome, you need to take it to the dealer and have it checked out. I had a Rover 220SDI a few years ago that had the same problem. On that car the dealer (without looking at the car) said it was probally the connections between the steering wheel and the airbag itself, I can't remember exactly, but it was known for these connections to wear out.

The light went off a few weeks later, never to be shown again. (The bulb probably blew!).

Anyway, I would get it checked out. Don't worry about it going off accidentally, when the SRS light is on, the airbag will not deploy.

Hi Jerome

I know it sounds strange but have you moved the seat forward/backwards recently?

There's a connection under the seat to the seat belt tensioners (I think that's what its for!) that sometimes works loose if you've moved the seat. That's what it was on my car anyway.

Just unplug and replug the connector firmly and hopefully your problem will go away :-)

**Make sure you disconnect the battery first!!**

had this too...

sometimes went on, most of the time it didn't, but got worse.

Turned out to be the rotary coupler which was broken. Costs £150 to replace, but after insisting for weeks to explain me how I could break that (it was just a very thin copper wire which snapped inside coupler, very hard to spot) they refunded the part (but without VAT nor labour, so it still costed me about £40).

There are various threads about this.

That is the item that I couldn't remember that was known to fail on Rover 200s as well.

For safety you should disconnect the battery, both terminals if you read the worksop notes, and importantly leave the car for a period of time for any residual current to eek away. This is applicable for any work on the SRS, which is not just an air bag(s).

I seem to recall 15 minutes being the time specified, but going away and having a cup of tea usually takes about 20 for me which is what I do. Remember you have to synchronise the alarm fobs to the car when the battery is reconnected, plus radio code and clock adjustment.

Excellent pictures as usual Dieter!

Well, I'm afraid I'm not a DIY man enough for this job !!!

The F is now at 48,000miles (80,000km) and thus should go to the dealer for servicing.
I'll explain this issue then. Now I have fitted the K&N, I will ask for the price of new spark plugs and leads (and labour too)

As far as I understand, the airbag can't go off by itself.
The only thing is that it will probably not go off if needed (and belt spanner neither)

Thanks for the tips anyway
