MG MGF Technical - SRS warning light

I have an SRS warning light that sometimes lights up. It remains on until I turn off the ignition and restart. Any clues?

That is exactly how mine started going two years ago. It now burns brightly all the time suggesting the airbags won't work if needed. When it really bothers me I will attack the rotary coupler on the steering column. The first things (easy to get at) I attacked were the pretensioner wire connectors under the seats but they were fine. A recent F register article from 'Willyfixit' suggests there is an easy treatment in removing the steering wheel and the connector for the rotary coupler simply needs cleaning.
All operations on the airbag circuits require caution to avoid accidental firing. There are plenty of more authorative sources about the detail before you get stuck in.

Attacking the rotary coupler was not on the plan for tonight. Does anyone else (member please)have experience with this problem?

As said above the first thing to look at is the wires under the seat (yellow if I remember correctly) - the connections have a habit of loosening off. If that doesn't do the job then it's a process of elimination, one of which is the rotary coupling. Have a look in the archives there should be tons of stuff on this subject. In the 8 years that I've been a member on this Forum, this question gets asked a lot.

Hi,
As I mentioned on the MGF Register, the problem is with the connection to the rotary coupler. There are two of them (SRS). The one going into the coupler and the other connecting it to the airbag on the steering wheel. There is a fuse for the SRS system so you can pull this fuse first. When you disconnect any of the plugs you will find that the appropriate bit of pyrotechnics, be it airbag or seatbelt pretensioner, you will find that the pins to that item are shorted together. You will find that just refitting the plugs will usually clear the fault. If you have any contact grease then adding a very small smear will be beneficial. Don't forget the passenger airbag if your car has one.
Good luck.

You will play around with various plugs and the problem keeps coming back. Then you get the rotary coupler changed and the problem goes away. These things must have a sliding contact which goes to high resistance. A Testbook will show this up if you go to a dealer who still has one.
