MG MGF Technical - steering
when steering on full lock tyres tend to rub against the plastic under the arch everything standard wheels tyres etc..does the suspension need regased? rough price anyone cheers |

Hi Davie When I purchased my F Trophy, I noticed tyre rub on the plastic and had the suspension regased. The garage charged £40.00, which seemed the going price at the time. Since then I have had the car lowered as the garage had pumped the suspension up to high. The height for a standard F is 368mm +/- 10mm, the height for the Trophy is 348mm +/- 10mm. I have had mine set at 345mm. I wouldn't worry to much about the rub on full lock. Have fun driving and avoid speed ramps! Geoff |

Forgot to mention you measure from the centre of the wheel to the rim of the wheel arch at the highest point. Geoff |

find out where it rubs use a hot air gun to genetly heat the plastic liner in the area, push back out of the way. this is the standard MG approved fix for this problem. |

Hydragas seems most likely, but if it only happens one way (eg full lock left but not right) it could be wheel alignment. The tracking on my car was so maladjusted that although all four wheels lined up the car was actually "crabbing" sideways, and I had lost half a turn of the steering wheel on a right turn but gained it on the left, hence the rubbing. After getting a pump up try to find a garage who genuinely do four wheel alignmment - the above set up was created (or at least compounded) by my local ex-MGR dealer and their preferred tyreshop, who really should have known better! |

It is a common problem, nothing to worry about, as already stated, all that you need to do is heat up the wheel arch liner and reshape it a bit. |
