MG MGF Technical - STEERING COLUMN

hi going to try and fit a second hand STEERING COLUMN on my mgf is there any hint on how to do this also how do i take steering wheel off with out the air bag setting off thanx
pd dixon

why are you going to fix a new one then ?
Darren Jeffery

pd,

Disconnect the battery and wait 20 minutes to let the charge in the airbag trigger dissipate before removong the steering wheel.

Good luck!

Just interested really, but why are you fitting a replacement steering column? Usually not necessary unless the car has been involved in a shunt and the plastic locator lugs have failed...
Rob Bell

Hope you know what you are trying to do there.

Take care on the column fixtire joints at your second hand part.
They are almost damaged from wrong dismantling or from another impact :)

Dieter

Nice picture there Dieter - that is the bit I was refering to! :o)
Rob Bell

reason for fitting the new one is that the car pulls to left and when front wheels are off the floor the steering wheel turns to left
pd dixon

pd,

As you will see from the web page which Dieter refers to that this can be fixed without changing the column.

Agreed - no need for a new column. The assistance sensors need re-aligning. You can find specialists who can do this pretty cheaply - or you can DIY if you are confident in your own work (which if you were going to replace the steering column anyway, I would presume that you are!)

See here for more details on what needs to be done: http://mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/common_problems/epas_reset/index.htm
Rob Bell

yeah seen that it could be fixed but thought i would change the colum as it was only 50 quid to buy anyway can not find anyone near hartlepool that re-align for me dont fancy doing it myself
pd dixon

Fair enough - just make sure that the plastic pegs are in good condition before you buy - and ensure that you're buying an EPAS steering column!
Rob Bell

hi buy my Digital volt meter the reading was oo.3 is this out by much and does it need resting
pd dixon

I did mine at the beginning of the year and while it's a fiddly job it's not rocket science. I would say that it's a lot easier than changing the entire column. The cost of the job was some security torx sockets and a 6v battery. Here's another "how to" guide -

Hi guys
I have had this problem since last September and have been searching for the answer since.. I had a word with Dieter and his website shows the diagram with the SIX wire torque sensor that I have.

I still have no idea of the way to reset this one.

Hope you dont have this one PD

Mike,

If you turn your ignition on to the first position that will give you power to the torque sensor. You could then try back probing the wires in the connector block with your multimeter set to milivolts. I would start off wth the yellow and green wires to see if you get a reading then hopefully if you reposition the torque sensor it will bring the reading back to zero and your EPAS will be working as normal.
David Clelland

Sorry Mike, I should have said turn the ignition to position 2 (not position 1)and you'll get 5v to the EPAS.
David Clelland

David,

great job on the clear instructions on how to set the EPAS.

Cheers,
Branko

Branko,

I'm afraid that I can't take the credit for the instructions and pictures, it's just a link that I found on another Forum. I used the instructions on Rob's site when I did mine.

Mike,

It just occurred to me, why don't you jack and support the front of the car. Presumably, when you turn the ignition to position 2 then your wheels will turn. So using the instruction to adjust the torque sensor, you should be able to alter it and by trial and error find a setting so that when you turn the ignition on the wheels don't turn. That way it won't matter whether you've got 4 or 6 wires in the connector block.

Thats one of the things I have left for a long weekend. If I dont decide to go to MS for something else and get him to do it then.

Cheers

when turning hard left or right i can feel a slight nock in steering and feel it in brake peddel what can be causing this.
Matt
