MG MGF Technical - Steering Problem!

Hi,

Apologies for repeated myself but I have just found the tech section(posted previously in General).

I have a 98 MGF VVC which occasionaly feels harder to turn to the right. If you turn the steering wheel from side to side when stationery it feels that there is a slight knock - almost like a build up of pressure that is then released - only happens to the right though!

Had all tracking checked and nothing is loose - any thoughts??

Not sure on this one Rob, a split concertina boot on the steering rack will mean less lubrication, tyre pressures could mean it is dragging a wheel but you would notice other problems too a track rod end normally wouldn't cause the symptoms you describe, just a vibration/pull to one side, so this leaves the EPAS unit - i don't know much about it, maybe Will could help here?

Hi Rob - sounds like a classic 'dirty terminal on the EPAS ECU' fault.

Accessing the EPAS ECU is easy - just remove the glove box (as detailed here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/glove_box_removal.htm) and the ECU is positioned vertically above towards the side of the vehicle. Remove the connectors, spray on some proprietary 'Contact cleaner' (available from Maplin's etc) on both the male and female sides of the plugs, and reconnect. Hopefully, that should solve the problem.

Rob - yup, I have - sorry for not dropping you a mail earlier: I jest not, I've had to delete something like 200 junk mails before responding to all the interesting stuff!!! Will be updating the dash conversion page shortly now :o)

I have exactly the same problem. I have already cleaned the contacts on the EPAS unit and it made no difference. Theres a plug from the sensor, on the steering rack, which I am going to clean next. I suspect that it's going to be the sensor, on the steering column though. Does anyone know if the sensor is just a pair of contacts, or not.

Not, and I'm afraid that if the sensor is shafted then a new stearing coloumn is the MG answer.

My problem sounds similar and my veering both ways may be my attempt to counter the left hand pull. As I find the steering very light. My “F” has done 40k and is likewise a 2000 model
