MG MGF Technical - Sticking clutch pedal (TF160)

Hi Guys

Long time, no post!!! However, for the last two mornings my clutch pedal has been dragging, i.e. returning slowly from each depression.

Once the car interior is warm (OR, of course, the engine bay??) the pedal springs back as normal.

After a day in the office car park, it still functions properly, it just seems to happen after a night on the drive.

Could the pedal just need lubricating, or is it likely to be something more sinister?

Hope everyone is keeping well and you've all had (and are continuing to have, thanks to global warming ;-( ) a good summer!!

most likely to be the actual clutch release lever sticking where it enters the bellhousing. Needs lots of lube applied while 2nd person continually depresses the pedal, to work into the pivot.

What kind of lube do you suggest and is the clutch release lever easily accessible??

Should this lubrication be part of the service schedule?

I'm assuming your car is only 5 years old?
If so then hopefuly corrosion would not be prevelant in the clutch lever area.

Problem could be the clutch master cylinder.
There may be air inside the clutch system or
the return spring in the master may be losing it's 'springyness' (new word??) or
the rubber cups in the master bore is not moving smoothly.

Check your clutch fluid level. Is it correct?

Car is 3 years and two months old.

The thing is, it ONLY happens first thing in the morning, when the car has been standing for 12/13 hours in the cold.

I had the same thing less than a year after having a new clutch fitted. Clutch would be sticky when cold but fine after 30mins driving.

The guys at B&G simply sprayed WD-40 (or similar) into the top of the gearbox/clutch - problem solved! and has been fine for the last 10k+ miles..

Give them a call - i'm sure they could explain what and where to spray a little better..

Bit of a long shot, but easy to eliminate - check that clutch pedal return spring is Ok

for the release arm pivot, WD40 for a couple of minutes then engine oil or similar (I use 3-in-1) for another couple of minutes...

How do I get to the release arm pivot, David? Is it an under the car job?

You can remove the engine access panel (rear parcel shelf) and reach down behind the engine and spray like a dervish

or from underneath.
