MG MGF Technical - Sticky Clutch Pedal

I'm having a problem with my clutch on my Y2K F. Last drove the car on Thursday and thought the clutch felt heavy but put it down to my 'big' shoes. Got into it today and started it up and the clutch pedal stuck in the down position, kicked it a few times and pumped it and it worked ok but still feels heavy. Any ideas as to what it might be? Is there somewhere obvious that needs lubricating?

Stticking again this morning, frees off after about 2 or 3 miles of use but feels heavy - anyone else had this problem?

Suggest that you check the master cylinder for hydraulic fluid...if "pumping" improved situation, you have dangerously low level in reservoir...hth

Sorry, missed out "may" (have dangerously low etc)

Chris, we recently had a car with this problem and it eventually developed into a seized clutch actuating arm. We fitted a modified shaft with a drilled centre and a grease nipple on the top. This made the clutch wonderfully light to use. I am costing out to make a few shafts with the grease nipple mod. In the meantime try squirting release agent onto the actuating shaft and working the pedal at the same time. I doubt if this will permantly cure the problem as the shaft will have rusted and damaged the surface of the mating parts. To fit a new shaft requires the gearbox partially removing, not the nicest of jobs.
HTH.

Thanks - looks like the WD40 is coming out tomorrow
(not fluid loss it's definitely a sticking down pedal)

Mike,

Sounds like an excellent idea, especially if it makes the clutch much lighter. Will it fit '96 MGF 1.8i ?

Early Freelanders also suffered from the same
problem as this, Clutch actuating arm seizing.

Seven years later and this BBS comes to the rescue once again. I had exactly the same sticking clutch symptoms on my 97 VVC and was thinking new master cylinder thoughts. Some oil dribbled onto a warm actuating shaft where the lever from the slave cylinder is attached has "cured" yhe problem - at least for the time being.
