MG MGF Technical - Strange noise from rear left quarter!

Hi

I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same problem.

For a few weeks I have noticed a noise from the rear left of the car when going over holes in the road. It sounds like an empty window liquid container and its retaining clip moving around.

There are two noises...a hollow sound and a higher pitched rattle.

I suppose it could be something to do with the air intake pipe.

This weekend I will take a look by removing the engine cover.

Any ideas where to look?!

Thanks

I do remember once when accelerating away a HELL of a metallic sharp noise coming from left rear and it disappeared again after 2 or 3 seconds. I thought some mettalic thing got sucked in by the rear wheel and was ejected away again. But nah nah...

"the noise of death!"

Turned out to be part of the piston head edge (about 2cm long, 5mm large) getting squashed around in the cylinder, ripping away some aluminium from the block in his devastating tour and finally getting jettisoned through the exhaust! Surprisingly, only 1 day later R.I.P. VVC engine.

Your problem will probably just a 'lager' (I don't know how they call this in English, it some "wheel bearing" (?) or something, located inbetween wheel & axle)
Cheap to fix.

Or even cheaper, just something loose in engine bay.

Doubt it's quite as serious as Dirk's problem. :-)

If it's nothing obvious that's loose, it could possibly be your shocks that are knackered
or a slim possibility is the subframe mounts not being tight enough allowing it to move fore and
aft 2mm.

I have heard of both of these causing odd noises. :-)

Good luck...

Jeez, Dirk. Regardless of what anyone might say, your car was really sh*t, wasn't it?

A sound that on anyone else's car would be a coin rattling in the ashtray turns out to be your gearbox falling off or something!

I think I am beginning to see why the F is not your favourite car...

Hi

Thanks for your replies!

I dont think it is part of my cylinder breaking up thankfully!

Ive checked the shocks and they seem fine so I think the noise is coming from inside the engine bay.

Having never looked under the cover behind the seats I dont know what it might be but the noise is coming from the top of the engine area

Ill let you know if I find the problem!

Thanks

Tom,

If you have the K&N filter kit, it could be the resonance box that is making the noise. You can check easily by removing the protective grill from the engine bay and reaching down to the resonance box (where the old filter box was connected) and shake it a bit.

Had a terrible screaming noise coming from the rear left hand quarter on my *F* a couple of years ago (at the Dormagen Treffen) wasnt serious though - just turned out to be Dirk trapped in the wheel:-)

Sorry typo - should have been ....dirt trapped in the rear wheel....

I once had a flat tyre and the tyre dealer showed me the tyre afterwards and it had some smashed glass/iron in the thread which resembled Ted's glasses.

Oh well, for 80 the problem was solved

Like the engine, maybe :-)

You quite often get stones bouncing around under the car which can make quite loud noises.
