MG MGF Technical - surprise
My garage exchanged my plastic throttle housing for an aluminium Trophy one today, and when I collected my car this afternoon I was surprised by the effect of this relatively simple operation. I accelarated like I normally do, but to my surprise the car almost jumped away. Either my throttle must have been in a bad way, or the slightly larger air valve (48-52mm) has a larger impact than I thought. Does anyone of you have the same experience?
Yep, the larger diameter has a very nice effect :o)
Many Elise drivers have made the swap for just that reason (someone did a before/after rolling road test and the difference was something like 6bhp IIRC)
Nice to see things worked out!
Oh yes...I experience the same feeling. Unfortunately, after a while, you get used to it. Hence other mods are needed to keep the grin
welcome to the engine breather club :)
Though, just purchasing the part is boring, you know what I mean *grin*
BTW, if you know anyone in B or NL who wants such a D- made LHD big bonnet box, I've now got one for sale. (175 EUR fixed price, new).
i have a 2001 mpi, with alloy throttle body but it's only 48 mm ...
does the trophy one will have the same impact on my car ???
It's the size that matters,
ok , what can i expect with a kn 57i kit fitted +big throttle body??? how many hp???
I've fitted both to my 99MPi, and I would guess around 12 HP. The car responds a lot faster. The TTB will make the K&N louder.
where can i buy the TTB??? only in GB???
By post from Mike Satur or Brown & Gammons?
I prefer buying from Mike as he helps out with a lot of stuff, and B&G seems to make money out of delivery costs. So try Mike he will be the man for ya.
ok , thanks a lot...
i know mike satur ,it seems to be serious..
is it an easy DIY job (k&n+TTB+rover 820 airbox???)
So let's see,
K&N + 8BHP (+ 15BHP VVC)
Exhaust + 4BHP
TB + 6BHP
Total +18BHP MPI
Total +25BHP VVC
Tony Escort Driver
Or to put in another way, is an MPI with exhaust, filter and throttle body as quick as a TF135 (+- a couple of HP). Probably, I reckon. However, the 135 does have those high lift cams....
Can this modification be done to the TF135 - or has the breathing been improved in this engine?
Simple answer - no, it's already been done!
There aren't any real proven methods of improving HP on a 135 as the breathing's much improved over the F anyway, well not without getting the head off or doing silly things with multiple throttle bodies. However, I'd speculate that a good qualify cold air box (ITG etc) or an exhaust would improve bhp/torque marginally. As usual, speak to a specialist such as Mike if you're in need of more power!
to ask a real Dutch question: how much does it cost to have the throttle housing replaced by a trophy one. And -maybe this should have been my first question - what exactly is a "throttle housing" (what's the Dutch word)?
Expect £130, and its the whole piece that fits between the airfilter and the inlet manifold (where the throttle cable goes)
Or talk to Dieter and ask how much for an adapted Opel throttle body (much cheaper, but a little more work).

<<<And -maybe this should have been my first question - what exactly is a "throttle housing" (what's the Dutch word)?>>>
If you mean a throttlebody, translated in Dutch it is a 'Gasklep'. I paid around 200 euro to had it replaced.
I am interested in the bonnet box. Send me an Email OK?
