MG MGF Technical - TF EXHAUST ON MGF VVC
Dear Enthusiasts, Is it possible to install a TF exhaust on a MGF VVC? 1998? Cheers Philly |

Yes, but this will require either the fitment of a TF catalytic converter or the fabribation of a elbow joint to connect the existing catalyst to the new exhaust's inlet flange. Second 'problem' is the control of the 'active noise control' valve. This is ECU actuated on the TF. You could have a manual switch to perform the same job. Hope this helps |

Rob, I'm not sure it would fit, I'm sure I remember seeing a new bracket to the side of the right hand exhaust pipe... I don't think this bracket is on the old 'F exhaust systems. Can't look at one now, so I can't compare. Steve. |

Hmm, I guess this question needs to be answered by someone with a TF - or else it'll have to wait until I get a look at some TF's at Silverstone this weekend. To be honest Steve, I have no recollection of seeing any additional bracketry associated with the TF back box - but the images I've seen don't cover this area particularly well :o( |

Rob- does the pipe actually go to the ECU, or is it just routed to the inlet manifold? Will |

Not quite sure what you mean Will? If you mean the control of the active noise control valve, see JT's post: >> You can see a picture of the exhaust flap/valve on my 135 at http://www.bath.ac.uk/~ccsjst/mgf/tfexv1.jpg It either permits or denies the flow of exhaust through the RH pipe. (a good pipe to use during emission tests I reckon :-) It is vacuum operated; the vacuum is held in a reservoir fed from inlet manifold. The exhaust flap is sucked open by the operation of an electrical switch which opens a valve in the small plastic vacuum tube between the reservoir and the exhaust flap. http://www.bath.ac.uk/~ccsjst/mgf/tfexvre.jpg shows reservoir and switch mounted in rear right hand wing. << So on a MGF you could have an electrical switch - or even use a cable and lever arrangement inside the cabin to control the butterfly valve in the tail pipe, disposing of the vacuum operation altogether... |

Ah, that could be what I was thinking of, that looks like its the thing I saw through the bumper! oops. Ignore my last post then! Steve. |

Philly asked,Is it possible to install a TF exhaust on a MGF VVC? 1998? Any particular reason why you would want to? Mike. |

Rob, As I understand it, When the throttle is opened air flow passes easier thru the throttle, this would lead to less pressure between the air filter and the throttle - you could use this to open the exaust flap at open throttle (where you want more power/noise). Not that that was exactly what I said ;-) but it seams that the system used is actually more like the break servo- it uses the vacume in the inlet manifold to charge and then uses an electrical signal from the ECU to open the flap. This seems the more expensive option as it required a direct change to the MEMS ECU that would only (?) be used on one of the meny cars which use it. Will |
