MG MGF Technical - Thanks, but now - 52mm TB
Having read a previous thread I now no longer have flickering brake lights - so thanks for the advice - repair is even easier than was suggested!! Is there anyone out there who can provide accurate figures re the benifit of fitting a 52mm TB and K&N 57i kit to my '96 1.8i? Thanks Gareth |

Carrying out this upgrade will not give you any real power improvement, but it will allow a larger amount of air to enter the engine faster, which will improve the throttle response. ie. when you plant your foot on the throttle, there will be less of a delay till the engine picks up, No BHP Gain but as you've got the K& N it will compliment it perfectly, so i would go for it, Dave |

Thanks Dave, I do not yet have either the TB or K&N, are you saying theres not much point fitting one without the other? |

A standard 1.8i engine doesn't pull air/fuel in at a rate that a 48mm TB can't cope with, so a 52mm TB won't increase the maximum flow so no power increase. MGR developed the 52mm TB for the 160bhp variant, so logically until your engine is breathing well enough to develop similar levels of power, the larger TB won't be beneficial. However, the bigger diameter TB will flow a given volume of air with less pedal angle than the 48mm, so the car can feel quicker. Provided the K&N is getting plenty of cool air there will be a small power increase irrespective of which TB you use. See Rob's page on the subject http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/air_filters/new_airbox.htm |
