MG MGF Technical - that epas again damm torq screws

hi happy easter thought i would sort the epas out disconnected the battery, took out fuse panel, to be greeted with two torque bolts. does anyone have an a idea to which size is needed??? had to put it all back because could not find the right one in my toolbox .

thanks 8-( thought i would have had her sorted for the mot. another day then
darren jeffery

I use a allen key most of the time, 9 out of 10 it works. But i really should invest in some torque bits.
Paul

Are we torqing torx?
A Bit

Its nice to torque as BT used to say.

Sure its not torx bit?
Joe one

Probably BUT as we all know what they mean we do not find it necessary to be clever:-) BTW that :-) equals a smiley face!
Ted Newman

>Sure its not torx bit?

;) No

It's E-Torx socket, not a torx bit.
Dieter

hi dieter its two bolts that are like in a gold kind off coating covering a metal plate. so i am thinking it a torque socket what you said could you get back to me on the size req ???
its epas sensor under a metal plate on the steering rack.

thanks darren
darren jeffery

Ahhh, apology, now I got you :)

You are at the EPAS torque sensor !
http://www.mgfcar.de/epas/sensor_2674.jpg

Torx bit of course, but with security pin in the centre.
Not sure about the size, could be anything with T15 with security hole.
I could look up my torx insert box and get back with size suggestions if you could supply any metric measure of the outer shape.
Dieter

Ah, those security head bolts. The sockets you need are available (I bought a set at Silverstone a couple of years ago) - try Draper
Rob Bell

hi rob and dieter thanks for the advice. tried all the torques which i was given none seem to work. why couldnt rover just put ordinary bolts on the car. i dont have the measurments to hand. but if you could find which one i need i would be most happy.

had a look today... looks like someone else who had the car has been there before. just hope i can get them out. done the hard work getting the car ready for work to be let down but two torques...

darren jeffery

>why couldnt rover just put ordinary bolts on the car

for the reason I stated last time we talked about this, they don't want people (even their own mechanics) playing with this delibertly or (especially!) by accident
Will Munns

fair comment will, but when you dont have 400 pounds to hand and i know what to do have an idea how to do it if that makes sense.
spoke to many people about adjusting it mines just need a smidge out not far sensor wearing on the bearing saves 400 squid

You're grossly mistaken if you think that Rover care about saving about £400 of _your_ money five years after the car was brought!

Of course you could get round these annoyances by getting yourself a midget, then you can blame previous owners when you find metric bolts jammed into imperial holes, or rust when the heads shear off, or the faces on the bolts are so bad you can't fit any reasonable socket onto them.

You kids these days, don't know you're born ;-)
Will Munns

<You kids these days, don't know you're born ;-) >

Will - what is this metric thingy??? :-)
Ted Newman

<Will - what is this metric thingy??? :-) >

Do you think it'll catch on? :)
Pete

Metric nuts and bolts are far cheaper than imperial ones, so I guess so, also most socket sets come with a better range of metric sockts than imperial ones and allen keys are almost all metric.

The french are winning, it's time to fight back, join the BNP, replace all your wiring with Twin and earth (red and black) and buy yourself some bent banannas.

Pick up your spanners friends and join me in making the imperial fleet (cars)
Will Munns

Will - what is this metric thingy??? :-)

Two frenchmen, seven years and the measurement of the meridian arc from Dunkerque to Barcelona through Paris gave us the metre platinum standard. They calculated the metre as one ten-millionth of the distance between the North Pole and the equator.

Fantastic achievement as I think they got it right to 0.0001 per cent.

It seems Britain went metric in 1863 when parliament passed an act, but The Lords either went to sleep or on holiday and the law just fizzled out.

I'll shut up now.
Ken Waring

"However, the first prototype was short by 0.2 millimeters because researchers miscalculated the flattening of the earth due to its rotation"

2/10000 or 0.02%

Which is quite accurate, but twice the diffrence in liner to block hight
Will Munns

Three cheers for the Lords doing exactly what they were originally put there for.
:o)

<would sort the EPAs out>
What is wrong with it that needs sorting that you can do ??
If a nut/bolt requires a special tool, then that is because there are no 'Users Serviceable/maintenance' bits inside and only he who knows what he is doing has the correct tool. Basic Aircraft engineering practice.

Canwe get back to question in hand please. thanks g farthing. the sensor just need adjusting . a smidge down to when you turn key on steering wheel goes slightly to the left... i cleaned out the epas box with spray7 as rob bell said know diffrence. so i am taken this avenue the "question" what the right torque security bolt required to tackle those gold bolts on the epas sensor cover under the steering rack . sorry for being off just want to get it sorted out thats all..

darren jeffery

No torx bit will fit into a security bolt head - or at least it won't unless you drill out the centre pillar that prevents you from using a standard torx bit...

That's the fiddly bodgy way around the problem. The solution is to buy the correct security bit. As mentioned before, they're available - and probably available on-line too. The Draper catalogue would be my first port of call... :o)
Rob Bell

You're all nuts :)
KEW

thanks rob going to go to my local place to get some or take a impression off the nut. to show the guys off the correct size. dieter sent me a message on this thread . have a look at the picture he sent me he thinks it may be t15 umm
thanks again mate for getting back
darren jeffery

Rob.
Are your bits 'Draper' ?? with a Part Number 'TXTxxx'
ie http://www.draper.co.uk viz. Tork Drive Tamperproof.
Geoff F.
G. Farthing

Mine aren't Draper - as mentioned earlier, I bought mine from a tool trader at Silverstone a couple of years ago - I needed them to disassemble a pair of TF head lights (another story).

That said, it looks as though Draper have come up trumps - item 2 on this page: http://www.draper.co.uk/Pages/Pagesource/p53.pdf

Or http://www.snapon.co.uk Search for torx or SGDTRX50B

Try Machinemart, they do a tamper proof bit set.

I posted this earlier but it seems to have been removed??
