MG MGF Technical - Tickover hissing noise...snake perhaps ?!!

Hi everyone,

Can anyone help me with this peculiar request ??!! I was just parking my VVC back from a dinnertime run next to another vehicle and there sounds (to me !!) like a very small hissing noise ?? Can anyone enlighten me to what is may be ?? Does'nt get any louder when the engine is revved and is not noticed when the car is running.

It could be just that I maybe am hearing things and may be a characteristic of the engine.

Any comments very grateful !!

Cheers,

Tony

Admendment to thread: Not a constant hissing noise but sounds like (not that I'm an expert by any means !!) like what you would normally hear on a fan belt.

Another addition: can be heard from by the side mesh vents but not through the boot vents !!

err this happened to me, was my front tyre going flat.

Tony, are your engine bay cooling fans working properly ?

Mike,

They were the last time I heard them and no lights on the dashboard. As I say it could genuinely be the tickover noise but as soon as I hear anything funny I always investigate as I'm new to the MG and not particularly mechanically minded to say the least.

Mike,

It seems to be more a little squeeking noise and when the car is moving it's not noticeable.

Could it be the air intake "induction noise" via the throttle body?
more noticeable with a K&N97i induction kit
does it disappear when revved slightly
(undo the air intake from the throttle body and see if it makes this "hiss" more noticeable.)

Rob,

Thanks for your comments. The noise appears when idling but disappears when at high revs. Apologies if my description is poor but it seems to me more like a belt perhaps and is more audible from the right air inlet side but nothing can be heard from the vents from the boot.

cheers,

Tony, I would say this sounds like the normal sound from the belts.

Mike,

I'm beginning to think the same myself and that slowly I'm going insane !!! I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens.

Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated.
