MG MGF Technical - Tips on relacing fuel filter

Hi,

Plan to replace the fuel filter on the F as part of my "staggered servicing !!!".

Any suggestions on how to do this. Will there be fuel pressure in the pipe which I will need to relieve somehow.

Cheers

D.

Yes, I don't know the full procedure but remove the petrol filler cap before you start. This will help soem of the pressure disapate.

Derren,
Here is some info directly from the service manual.

My tip is when working with fuel always stick to strict safety practices like no smoking, do not work near any open flames or gas pilot lights etc.

1. Disconnect battery earth lead and depressurise fuel system by removing petrol cap.

WARNING: Petrol/gasoline vapour is
highly flammable, and in contained spaces
is also explosive and toxic. Always have a
fire extinguisher containing FOAM, CO2 GAS OR
POWDER close at hand when handling or
draining fuel.

2. Remove engine compartment access panel.
3. Position absorbent cloth around fuel filter outlet
union.
4. Loosen fuel filter outlet union to relieve fuel
pressure.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to the fuel
system pipes and components, use two
spanners when loosening or tightening
unions.

When done, tighten fuel filter outlet union to 30 Nm.

HTH,

Cheers,
Branko.

Just to second Steve's comment: opening the fuel filler cap reduces the back pressure in the fuel line, reducing the amount of fuel that spills out.

Go on Steve, tell 'em how we found that out! ROFL

If you look at where the pipes from the head reach the filter, the rubber pipes have a snap fitting, pressing the plastic clip into the bezel (towards the rubber hose) the hose will then pull off the pipe, this will release the pressure onto the rag you have wrapped around the pipe.

When removing the fuel filter you _must_ use a 'pipe spanner' get from halfords, using a normal spammer will lead to rounded nuts and pain.
