MG MGF Technical - Tornado
Hi Folks, Whilst on holiday recently (in Mexico) I saw advertised on TV a gadget called the Tornado. It was circular with fins inside not too disimilar to a Jet Turbine but the fins were fixed, did not turn. The gadget fitted inside the engine Air intake and the manufacturer claimed the design of fins caused the incoming air to spiral into a vortex. The result was an increase in power on average of 10 BHP. The Tornado was fitted in minutes and the air filter assembly just sat on top of it. Has any one heard of this gadget in the UK, the equivelent cost was about £30. If the claims were true, a fraction of the cost of the K&N only without the Yabbadabbadoo!!!! It appeared to be an American product. regards Chris |

IMHO Just about the worst thing you can do to an air intake on any engine is to vortex the air/swirl - it will feed less air into the combustion chamber - cause turbulence - so poor fuel air mix /detonation etc etc = poor fuel economy and poor performance The best airflow is smooth/linear and compressed evenly and designed for the car individually So - my opinion is its a Gimick! However I wish it wernt cause i would buy one - especially with a name like tornado :) |

>It appeared to be an American product. http://www.tornadoair.com/tech.htm Looks like lots of rubbish for me. ---------------------- http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/cars/msg0912083315469.html ------------cutted from the web ----------- http://www.teamzetec.com/board/xb.cfm?action=showpost&board=19&post=4530 HAVE THAT TORNADO SH*T. IT IS A RIPP-OFF. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. JUST GET YOU A NEW INTAKE IT WILL DO YOU FINE. i have lots of friends who have bought it and all they say is that its not good for nothing. use your money for something else. ----------------------------- :) Dieter |

Hmmmmmm, They obviously don't have the same high standards in advertising laws as we do in the UK. I have the K&N and I think I will stick with it. Yabbadabbadooo!!!! |

I doubt it has any advantage from either engine efficiency or aerodynamics perspectives. I could witter on about airflows, pressures and speeds, vortices and drag, vortices and pressure drops but the conclusion is as said above - don't bother! Internal combustion engines power gains can be had by increasing air in the combustion chamber by (1) gas flowing a head i.e less turbulence, giving a faster airflow, fit a fast flow filter (KN et al) and a freeflow exhaust. (2) increasing air pressure/density, only drive at low altitude, in cold air etc!!! (or KN cold air induction kit) (3) increasing oxygen by NOX or water injection etc (4) forcing air in - ram air air intakes or turbochargers et al (5) reducing energy losses within air flows, engine, transmission and rubber/road interface In summary, the claims made are suspect, you don't get anything for nothing and if it was that easy car manufacturers spending millions on engine development would fit them. In conclusion K&N!!! |
