MG MGF Technical - tracking
I have put 16'' alloys on my MGF 1.8i. The tracking needed doing and I was told it had to be done by an MG garage - this cost £30, plus £30 to pump up the suspension. Now the car looks like it should be off-roading! Will it do any damage if its too high/should I get it checked/ will it settle of its own accord? |

The ride height will 'settle down' after a while. Theres plenty of info' in the Archives about this. The Ride height will be affected by the Weather also, when it's cold the ride height will be lower and in the summer the car will be 'higher'. mark. |

Measure the ride height: it should be 368 ± 10 mm at 17C (correct by taking off from the mean 0.4 mm per degree below this temp) measured from the front wheel centre to the wheel arch lip vertically above. Do this on both sides. If the height is significantly greater than the upper limit, respectively suggest to the dealership concerned that they have cocked things up, and put it right. AND get the tracking reset. Any settling of the ride height will have occured withing 6 hours of the ride height being set: it is not therefore likely to settle any more than it has already. It IS possible for you to reset the ride height yorself (I've done it a few times now)- and quite often, this is the best way of ensuring that the height is exactly how you want it!!! Just got my 2000 VVC with 16inch wheels back after having the ride height checked. It also now looks like a 4X4. Although the ride quality has improved greatly over what it was like before. I brought the car from a MG dealer at Christmas and they said it had been checked over. I found the headlights were all over the place, It was not level and the ride height was between 30 and 40mm low. They agreed it was substantially lower than it should be when I picked it up yesterday, plus the tracking was out and the headlights required aligning. Good pre delivery service!!! NOT. It is only 15 months old with 7,000 miles. I wait to see how it settles down and then I will re-check the height again. |
