MG MGF Technical - Trophy 160 Throttle Body on a '97 VVC
Saw Martin Woods' article in the September edition of Safety Fast. Anybody know how much BHP would be added by putting an Trophy 160 throttle body on my '97 VVC? My girlfriend uses the car so I would be unpopular adding noisier air filters or exhausts, but any other suggestions for getting more power would be welcome |

According to a report by Roger Parker, there is no gain to be had by fitting a Trophy160 TB to a car that is using the standard airfilter assembly - the OE airbox represents too much of a restriction to airflow. However, if a free flowing airfilter is fitted (you could use one of the quieter set ups, such as the ITG or Pipercross Viper - or indeed a filter enclosed in a Rover 820 airbox as discussed elsewhere on this board), then you get the advantage of the airfilter, plus a further 5 bhp from the larger throttle. Phil, I have a Trophy TB on my VVC together with a K&N replacement element filter in the standard air box - modified with a length of tubing to the left hand side air intake to bypass the air intake silencer and to take in cold air. This results in only slightly more noise - a bit of a growl on acceleration with much much better throttle response and feeling of power. The actual power gains may not be massive, I have seen many figures talked about, it seems to be 5 or 10 bhp for the air filter mod, with another 5bhp for the throttle body. I have tried the throttle body without the air filter mod on a Rover 200 VVC and although the throttle response was improved, the results were not as noticeable as they were on my F with both mods. To add to Rob's comment, there is sod all gain below 5000rpm and from there is a divergence of the power graphs (48mm to 52mm)so that at peak power there is a recorded 5 bhp gain. Rog |

Dot has the 160 TB on her Elise 111S (VVC), with sport exhaust and Hurricane airfilter/coldairbox. at Emeralds 163 Bhp and a very nice torquecurve ! see : http://home.t-online.de/home/hazel/rr/index.htm Bob vanM |
