MG MGF Technical - Trophy Airbox.

Am going to fit above to my 18MPI F (I hope!).

Has anyone done this ?.

Other than the obvious size difference are the fixings in the same place ? (they look it!), and do you have to remove the existing resonator box ?? ( I believe its a **** of a job).

TIA.

Yes, the Trophy airbox will slot straight in Mark. It is, as you say, usefully larger. :o) You should be okay with your flexible hose because you haven't got an alloy inlet plenum, so the throttle body is that little bit further away from the airbox itself.

The reasonance box doesn't need to be removed, thankfully. However, you will reap some significant benefits if you re-route the intake pipes to the LHS engine intake grille. Demon Tweeks will sell you heat resistant, wire supported ducting with an ID of 69mm that can be used to good effect. Either that, or invest in the Moss cold air induction kit - but this does strike me as being somewhat costly for what it is!

Thanks Rob.

See the pictures of the boxes on your site and took a chance buying this airbox hoping it would fit!!.

Didnt realy want a K+N cone, so the larger airbox seemed the way to go (plus it was only £25 including pipes :o) ).

To be honest was just going to leave the original air intake as is, and just run the extra trophy opening to the side intake!.

Now where are them plasters for my knuckles ??.

Have fun Mark! LOL

Do let me know how you get on - would be good to put some 'retrofitting' instructions on to that page, along with an opinion as to whether it is worth it. :o)

Have you got a Green replacement panel filter for the new airbox?
Rob Bell

piper x do one as well :-)
Mike (Mersea)

And K&N don't as far as I know - which is odd!

Rob.
The Trophy Airbox was nearly new when removed and comes with the standard filter, so will just run with that for now!!.

By the way just looked at that cold air pipe in the the Moss catalogue......£40!!!!!, as you say ..OUCH!!!!.

Mark,
I tried this some time ago and as I recall you will need to buy the airbox bracket as this differs from the standard one. In order to fit the bracket you need to either remove or modify the resonator box. If you need the bracket it is part no PHU000170 and cost 19 in sept 2002.

In the end I gave up as i did not want to destroy the resonator box. I fitted a K & N flat panel filter to the original airbox and used some of the Trophy tubing to take the feed from thr left hand side air intake. This is purported to release up to 10 bhp. Have a look at the air filter section on Rob's site
http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/
there are some graphs provide by Bruno in Portugal to back this up.

Yikes - I hadn't realised that the bracket actually differed Pete :o( I should have measured them both up when I had them together... agh! The benefits of hindsight... :o(

Mark, I still think that this project is a 'go-er' but you will need to remove the lower elbow joint to fit the new airbox.

Follow the K&N fitting instructions as far as step 6 - which deals with disassembly. The Trophy airbox bolts into position, whereas the original used plastic clips/lugs.

Good luck - and let us know how you get on :o)

Thanks Pete!.

HMMMmmmm, Same boat as you, didnt realy want to remove the resonator box!!.

Have you any idea what this bracket looks like (would it be a simple DIY fabrication)??.

Mark

Having looked at the one I bought and how I remember the original I think that it has a longer 'arm' at the bottom. Also the fittings were slightly different. If you do decide to go ahead I think that the investment of £20 for the proper bracket will save a lot of messing around.

Why not try the MGF centre, they may have a second hand one. I would offer you mine, but who knows, one day I might get round to braving it and make the switch!

If you remove the resonator box you will then have to cover the gap in the wheelarch to stop all the muck entering the engine bay.

Thanks Pete.

Tried to fit today, as you say without this bracket, its nign on impossible.
The bottom of the bracket holds the rubber grummet which the pin on the bottom of the airbox sits in, just after this grummet the bracket bends up at an angle and has fuel pipes/cables fixed to it, the Trophy airbox fouls these pipes/cables before the pin locates!.
Also only 1 of the 2 side fixings lines up, would think the resonator box would need to be removed to fit the new bracket, but looks like not a lot of fun!!.

In the end did as you, and fitted K+N panel to existing box and re-directed the intake to the side vent with the Trophybox air pipes!!.

May try again with the right bracket, cant say it will be to soon though!!. :o)
