MG MGF Technical - Trophy rear spoiler

Will the rear boot spoiler of a 2001 Trophy fit the standard mk 1 MGF? I am slowly coming over to the dark side, I have already fitted the Trophy front splitter and a K&N induction kit. Got a few other mods planned to. Also what are the benefits in fitting a 52mm throttle body?
Thanks in advance for all the replies Paul
Paul

I wouldnt bother with the Trophy boot spoiler, it doesnt do anything except act as an air brake.

splitter and K&N are good mods though. 52 mm throttle body a good mod too!

upgrading the brakes is also a good idea.

Neil

The tb makes the throttle more responsive which is slightly noticable. It adds about 1 hp but it is a worthy upgrade especially if you have sticky throttle. I have it on my F and would recommend it especially together with the air filter and a new sports exhaust.
Yigit

Personally, I'd definitely get the spoiler (I have a Trophy, so may be biased) purely because it is the best looking spoiler available for the F.

Fits no problem. Just don't forget the strengthening brackets for under the bootlid.
Kris

Nothing to add except to agree with Kris and Yigit! :o)
Rob Bell

Nothing to add except I think the spoiler is pointless, useless and yuk. Each to their own.

Neil

Nothing to add except what a complete waste of time the above post was!! :)
Kris

I have one and it makes it easier to close the boot!

.. and it prevents from getting on the additional boot rack for the missus luggage ;)

Me lost this game. :)

Defo the best looking rear spoiler (IMHO) - must admit I am a bit biased also as I got MS to fit one for me recently :)

Not sure about it's aerodynamic efficiency, although I understand that it was developed at MIRA.
Steve P

The Trophy package was one developed by Peter Stevens - and did, I gather, involve time at MIRA. It helped drop the CdA and has an impact on rear lift.

It's total contribution to the aerodynamic efficiency of the Trophy (which is the most 'aerodynamic' of all MGF based cars - TF included) is unknown - but if you love the look of it, go for it! :o)

Personally, I am keeping my F as Gerry designed it - I quite like the tail as it is :o)
Rob Bell

The chaps from Vehicle Handling Solutions seemed surprised that so few of the regular track day cars had the Trophy rear spoiler. But then again, of the rear lift was actually an issue then presumably all the Cup cars would have one.
Mike Hankin

Right Rob.

Keep the rear as Gerry drew it!

The handling boys from MGR told us/me that the rear spoiler doesn't work!

Also a proper working rear spoiler takes a lot of bhp to drag down the road. bhp that we dont really have. The bhp of F1 cars really just determines the size of rear wing they can carry. I dont think that we really need to have such downforce for the day to day use of our cars. Also I wouldnt bother fitting something which doesnt actually work, causes drag and clutters the look of the car.

...but the front trophy spoiler/air damn does work!
Neil

You can make the rear spoiler work - but you'd need to mount it on blocks to alter its 'angle of attack'... But to be honest, rear lift is much less of an issue than front lift.

The best solution I've seen thus far is to vent the radiator, Lotus Elise style, through the bonnet... There may even be a way of achieving this without having to junk the spare wheel, but it will require some working out...
Rob Bell

Yes Bob

Vented bonnet is a radical bit of surgery however, but effective! hmmmmmmm!

Neil

Kris
what is the strenghting brackets ? and where does it go ?
Just bought a trophy spoiler off MG rover and it does not have one in the box !!

Kevin

If i am correct in guessing the support brackets will go inside the boot were the pins for the spoiler come through, this will stop the weight of the spoiler distorting the boot or even ripping it off. Correct me if i am wrong?
Paul

Just to reply to say my Trophy spoiler was delivered this morning. Put it on the car and i think i definately made the correct choice ( It looks the dogs ) Its going in to be sprayed this weekend as it is currently yellow ( purchased of ebay genuine mg part for £62.00 ) I know it won't exactly do anything but it definately makes the car look 100% better.
Cheers for all the replies even the negative ones
Paul

Paul aerodynamics can generate huge forces so make sure that your new airbrake is properly fitted with all the right brackets etc.
Neil

>>Also a proper working rear spoiler takes a lot of bhp to drag down the road. bhp that we dont really have<<

Are you saying that if anyone has an MGF Trophy SE they will see an improvement in performance by removing their rear spoiler - if so, how much in terms of BHP equivalent gain ?
Steve P

Driving in the winter with the hardtop on the fuel consumption is less than driving in the summer hood down.
So i don't think that the rear spoiler can make it worse than driving hood down.

Cheers,
Sven
Sven Angelmahr

Steve, in theory this is right!
I can't comment on bhp equivalent, but it's a good idea. It will also reduce some weight.

You might have to get a new boot lid, in fact that might be the easiest way of replacement, just get a new boot from Vicky, That way when it comes to selling the car you have the original!

btw I was looking into Carbon Fibre replacement panels (bonnet and boot) sourced in China
Neil

Source bonnet, boot and front wings in CF Neil. Any luck finding a component supplier in China?
