MG MGF Technical - water leaks...

Yesterday, thought i'd give my car a good leak check, and blasted it with a power hose.

It actually held up remarkably well..

a few drips through wing-mirrors.
a few drips through slightly damaged rubber seals.

a lot of water in passenger foot well.

and also water seeping through sewed seems in soft-top.

So just a couple of questions.

1. Is there a suitable weatherproofing product for the soft-top? (I've been informed there is like a "bitumen" coating that it is supposed to be treated with at two year intervals)

2. Has anyone (Rob, Dieter??) got any pictures of this infamous heater box, with common points of failure?

Paul,

I can recommend using Autoglym soft top renovation kit. Comes as two bottles, one cleaning shampoo pre-treatment and the other a waterproofing coat. Available from Halford et al and B&G

I have seen another product on the market, B&G have some, which does the same job but has an additional product in the range which will restore the colour too (Like Henry Ford said "any colour as long as it's black').

the autoglym stuff is very good - and brings the black back too.

Paul,

I don't know of any website pictures, but have a look at this site.....

To check if water is coming in at this point, remove your glove box, and pull back the carpet from the bulkhead. You will then see a large curved plastic tube that comes from the air intake and connects to the heater. Remove this tube (I think it's held in place by just one screw/nut and simply pushes into the heater). You will then have a clear view of the seal and whether or not any water is getting in.

To change the seal, I seem to remember that you have to remove the large plastic cover at the back under the bonnet, and unfasten the master cylinder to be able to remove the intake box.

Whilst you've got the carpet up, have a look up under the dash, into the corners and see if any water is coming in there.
Have a look at http://members.aol.com/apttony/ to see where I mean.

Tony,

I had trouble with the link to Bulkhead Leaks on your site.

no problems with site here,

and thanks for info.

It's not a problem getting to the site but once in the site the button down on the left to Bulkhead Leaks gives me a 'Sorry We Can't Find That Page' error message. Other buttons work.

Bruce,

Sorry about that! :-(
Hopefully I have now cured the problem. :-)

Let me know if you can now access the 'Bulhead Leaks' page. Also, be interested to know which browser you are using.
