MG MGF Technical - Wet passenger footwell
This weekend I decided to tackle the wet passenger footwell problem. Armed with printouts from the archives and a tube of sealant I started trying to attack the problem from under the bonnet but got scared off dealing with the master brake cylinder. So, out with the glove box and remove the plastic duct/tube thingy that feeds the fan. Applied the sealant to the spongy bit and put it back. I am puzzled as to how this will fix the problem though. I imagine that all that happens now is that the water will run out at the fan end... Am I missing something? Is the leak between the outside of the duct and the body so it is external to the duct? If so then I imagine you would need loads of sealant - like about an inch all the way around! |

John Your thoughts echoed mine as I was stood on my head in the passenger footwell. I couldn't quite get my head round it either. It seems to work, but I can't work out why it should, as my logic was that it would drain into the heater. Is there a drain there? Someone must be able to come up with the logic, Rob, Dieter et al we need some pearls of wisdom. (And I used to design Yachts so I'm quite used to keeping water out with silican sealant!!!!) DJ |

That's a fair question DJ - to which, frankly, I don't have a good explanation. All I have is the evidence that this was the work that my dealer did to successfully solve the leaking heater box seal on my car. I seem to recall reading in SF a while back that the problem was not so much a porous foam seal (this was not specifically discussed), but poor fitment of the seal at the factory, such that it distorts when the heater is installed. Thus, it would seem that the silicone is enough to make good the problem. |
