MG MGF Technical - Whistling Manifold Gasket

Hi guys,

New to the forum so please bare with me.

Have the MG TF step speed.

My manifold gasket keeps whistling, mg have replaced it three times and it corrects the problem for 3- 6 months, then the whistle is back again. The whistling only occurs when the engine is cold and eventually disapears when the engine is warm - takes a while at the moment becuase of recent weather.

performance air filter. i keep seeing these cheap air filters on ebay. In your opinions do you think they would be any good?!

Cheers

Sounds like the manifold is warped but seals itself when it expands when hot, very strange event all in all, or possibly a crack in the manifold, I assume it is the inlet manifold we are talking about, is this plastic or alloy ?

as for filters the chaps/chappettes hear swear by them, a nice KN in a flower pot is what you should go for, or something similar

Cheers Mike,

not sure if its plastic or alloy, will investigate.

You have got to get this sorted as if it starts to leak coolant you could be in trouble one of 2 ways

1. the coolant gets into the intake ports, which wont do it any good
2. you run dry of coolant and get a nice HGF!

Neil

Cheers Neil,

Hoping to get the manifold gasket changed this weekend. Dad used to be a macanic and i can navigate my way round an engine so hopefully will do a better job than the guys at MG.

Coolant, did run the engine a little short once. Constantly checking it, only loses a little not much so hopefully its all good.

Many thanks

Rob,

if you and Dad investigate.

Check on one hand regarding warped manifold. Either plastic or alloy, and check aswell the surface of the head where the manifold seals. Thread length of the thread studs is important also.

Special with the alloy manifold had been problems over ten years ago with the plain surface.

Another is bolt torque of the nuts. It's as important to tighten in correct sequence as likewise the cylinder stretchbolts.
Bolt sequence from centre to outwards, anti-clockwise.
