MG MGF Technical - Whistling VVC

I have a 96 VVC with 30k on it which has started whistling at me!

It appears to happen when I am revving the engine at 4500rpm and disappears at 5100rpm. It only occurs when actually driving and almost sounds like a turbo noise..... I had a full service recently and had not noticed it before. It is not speed related but is specific to the rev range. It sounds to be loudest in my right ear and sounds higher up rather than lower down. It is more ntoiceable when the roof is down.

My local rover dealership (Clemo- Cleckheaton) had a look today and could not find the cause. They and I think it sounds like air intake - they have checked the air box and it is not loose.

It is back in Thursday. Any ideas/suggestions?

Oh and alos - where can I get decent replacement brake pads???

Intersting, see What's that noise?? thread.

>They and I think it sounds like air intake
That would be my first choice, check the box is properly shut (all clips engaged properly), if so then have a look at the filter, does it have any nicks in the foam/holes in the paper, check the hoses, not just the one between the engine and the box, but also the one from the box to the outside.
Finally pull out whole box and replace with K&N, you know you want to... go on go on go on

If it were an MPi I'd suggest Cam belt tensioner..... is it the same for a VVC?
tim woolcott

Sounds like Cam belt tensioner to me. I have a '97 vvc and it happened to me a few months ago, tensioner replaced and noise was gone.

You could check this by letting someone else rev up a few times while you listen at the drivers side at the back wheel. If you hear the noise there it is probably the belt tensioner

My car has this type of noise. It starts about 4400rpm and is alos dependant on throttle opening. At first I thought it was the tie wrap loose on the throttle body ( the one which holds the air duct on) but no. Checked all that. I reckon it's from the flexitube in the exhaust but it hasn't changed in two years. Exhaust system is still the original 96 one. Still goes like stink.

I just tell everyone that the turbo's leaking a bit!

How's things in Cleckheckmonsedge?

For brake pads try www.spareshq.co.uk (or maybe .com)

Bruce - does yours make the whistle when you are just revving or do you actually have 2 b driving Mine will not make the whistle unless the engine is under load.????
Nick Battye

Nick,

Yes the whistle only appears when the engine is under load at 4400rpm upto about 5500 and varies slightly in pitch and volume with throttle opening.

Mine whistles from 4500 to redline and Ive been told it could be due to the guts of the exhaust silencer breaking up. The car is a 1995 MPI with K&N so the Airbox theory is shot down here.
D Jamieson

The noise did disappear when the cat and exhaust were replaced. Interestingly my the old exhaust rattles when you shake it but I do not have another to compare.

Neil

Incidently mine also whistled from about 4500 to the redline.

Hmmmm...Bruce - I reckon our cars have the same prob - cheers all for that - I will let you know what if anything the MG Rover boys find....
Nick Battye

OK Nick,

Please send the results to mgfinbraunston@aol.com and post them on here of course. Sounds like lots of people suffer from this.

Well - the MG garage in Cleckheaton (Clemo Rover) found...............

.................Nothing.

! They have said that they have checked most things out and unless they get "really involved" they can't find anything - where that leaves me who knows...

But the engine had better not let go 'cos I will not be a happy bunny.
Nick Battye

Ive got a similar prob on mine. Sounds like a turbo whenever i accelerate over about 2000 revs. but only when accelerating not when travelling at a constant speed.

To be honest i think it sounds really cool. Probably knackering the car though.

Also it sounds like a diesel when idling.
