MG MGF Technical - Why the Hell would you buy a MGF!

Why? If you must have a car that is prone to break downs buy an Elise. If you want one that does not Buy a MR2!
I can't understand why anyone who reads this BB would think other wise. Every and i mean every owner i have meet has a sob story to tell.

I have driven alest 13 of them and no two handle anything like the same. MGR are about to dump the sub frames because they can't get them to handle either!

The MGF total CRAP!
Mega

>>YAWWWWWWWWWWWWN<<<<< Somebody break wind? Or was it the sound of a bull relieving itself?

Mcuh sooner have an MGF than live in Liverpool but there you go. Eh. Calm down, calm down.
Paul Lathwell

Why would someone who doesnt like mgf's look on this site???? and why if you have driven 13 ( and didnt like them ) didnt you stop at car number 1 or 2.

To say you carried on means there is something about the car ( or plain stupid for carrying on driving something you didnt like ) .

I dont know one person who hasnt had a sob story to tell about any make of car.

so scouse dickhead, do one...and dont bother us with your pathetic posts.
Gforceuk

Total crap, well no, but certainly it's not amonst the best built/designed cars of the late twentieth century. I bought my 3 year old MGF just recently. My observations are as follows: It looks quite nice, it handles pretty well and is enjoyable to drive. But I was pretty p----d off when we suffered a HGF within a month of purchase. Head skimmed, new rad (old one bunged up with oil), cam belt etc, very little change out of £1300! Having suffered this failure I discover this is 'normal' for the car. This type of failure I don't expect in a modern car.
Then when the weather got hot there was the stink of fuel, yes, yes I learnt all about MGF fuel tanks and yes, I parted with more of my cash (did get the dealer to pay 50%).
OK, so now I have a car that has a fragile head gasket and a clear design fault in the fuel tank (it still stinks of fuel by the way), I really don't expect this in a modern car.
So now the autumn arrives, as does the rain, do you know what? well of course you do, I discovered that the door/window seals leak. This sort of pathetic design is something I used to suffer in my '60 Lotus Europa, I really don't expect this in a modern car.
I'm sure there are many more delights for me to discover before too long and all the time telling my wife, but it's a nice car as I reach for the cheque book.
So total crap? well no, but one might imagine the end of term report on the MGF including phrases such as 'could do better'

Liverpool??? I take it we all know whay "test drive" means ...

It might be crap but so much better than being seen in a 309!

Since taking delivery of our *F* in February 1996 I have been on at least six long distance continental 'rallies' of about 2000 miles each and in company with about another nine MGFs and as far as I am aware we all got back home without problems (problems due to the MGF) so that is an average of ten cars per trip - times six trips - times 2000 miles equals 120,000.00 miles of trouble free touring and fun including many, many laps at very high speed on the Nürburgring.

So OK it is not the worlds best built car and it is not the worlds most reliable car and no (DIRK) I do not have my head buried in the sands so I do know that there has possibly been an above average incidence of cylinder head gasket failures and the tracking needs to be looked after.

BUT I personally will forgive the car its faults because it makes up for those problems by being an MG and allowing me to mix with members of the worlds best motoring club.

I think Ted has his rose tinted glasses on!

On the 2000 Treffen Ted had problems with one of his brake light bulbs and in this year's, Andy had to replace one of his headlight bulbs.

Clearly no reasonable person should expect such a serious of problem in only 120k miles of driving.

On a more serious note, the F is a delight to own and the few problems (in my expereince!) is a very small proce to pay for the enjoyment gained. Also as I never tire of reporting, the total cost of ownerstip on our F over over 4 years has been 4 annual services (dangerous thing to see before second MoT! next month!)

Cheers

Thanks to the people who where honest. No i don't steal cars i work with a chap who repairs hoods for a living. Let me ask this, do you think MX5 owners or MR2 owners have this level of hassle?
Mega

>do you think MX5 owners or MR2 owners have this level of hassle?

What makes you think we care. Do you not think perhaps that we have chosen the F for reasons other than reliability? There and will continue to be thos you buy F's, have problems and then move to something else as a result. Equally there will also be those that buy F's and continue to enjoy them. Just read the archives if you want to continue with the ever so over done kind of thread. Goodbye and have a pleasant weekend. :)
Paul Lathwell

>do you think MX5 owners or MR2 owners have this level of hassle?

dunno, I don't waste my time posting "MR2's are crap" on their bulletin boards.. but i guess if I was sad enough to yeah they'd get this level of hassle.

I am soo sorry to the world that I am so sad as to have mistakenyl chosen an MGF.. Oh dearie dearie me, what is the world coming to...
Now where's me Burkha?

Graeme Card

Did I start all this? "why the hell did you buy an MGF?" well I might not be an expert but I love it, ok? So get a life! ps I didn't always live in Liverpool, what's that got to do with it? Thanks to those who sent me helpful advice, Jenny
jenny

Jenny AKA Mega? Who knows?....

>Did I start all this? "why the hell did you buy an MGF?"

Can you not answer that question? Have you forgotten if you are Mega and posted the original message in this pointless thread?

>well I might not be an expert but I love it, ok? So get a life!

What do you love - the MGF? and if you are Mega as your post kind of suggests why ask such a stupid question in such a stupid manner and then expect a sensible response?

>ps I didn't always live in Liverpool, what's that got to do with it?

Very little to be honest, but then if the original poster wants to ask a really childish and pathetic question then the response is likely to be very similar.

>Thanks to those who sent me helpful advice, Jenny

Again, ask a sensible question in a sensible manner and you will get sound advice.

Naturally, the point of this thread was to yet again stir up another pointless thread on the BBS. There you go, I've been the one to take the bait this time for a change but I will no longer bother so goodbye.

To anyone else tempted to take the bait to any further posts in this thread - PLEASE do not do so. Many thanks. Have a wonderful weekend all. :)
Paul Lathwell

please low into this Mr Lathwell

Well I can Tell you it positive.

Jenny
You WILL come to hate it! Trust me you WILL!
Its total crap and i am getting very pissed off with the "Rose tinned" team who go around with its great view...........It is NOT!

I hope that MGR will one day produce a Good sports car and they will soon KILL this crappy little metro bit&bobs sh*t heap!
MEGA

>>>>they will soon KILL this crappy little metro bit&bobs sh*t heap
....talkin' 'bout yourself again....
David

>Its total crap and i am getting very pissed off with the "Rose tinned" team who go around with its great view...........It is NOT!

You can get as pissed off as you like we will only laugh at you some more for being so foolish. One of the silliest things in the world is to actually get angry over stuff posted on a BBS.

What do you drive?
Tony Smith

MEGA drives a Peugeot 306 GTI-6, the six is for the six speed box that make the most of it's narrow power band and torqueless engine.

Gareth Kidman

If you want a "torqueless" engine look to the MGF 160/ZR160 matey!
Mega

Ok i will. For a start the ZR160 has a smaller capacity then your 2.0 car, so it's already at a disadvantage there. So although it has less torque, you'll find it peaks at a lower RPM, and thus has a bigger power band, making the engine more flexible than your pug.
Gareth Kidman

To Paul Lathwell, I give up...I'm not Mega, but I wrote "did I start all this" because this thread started after I posted an innocent e-mail saying I had bought my first MGF and asking for advice. Never mind. Jenny
jenny

Already let the 306 eat two ZR 160s!
Mega

Jenny,

Very sorry about that. I genuinely did get the impression you and Mega were one and the same - my mistake entirely, I now understand the meaning of your post. Please do not be put off by using the BBS I'm normally one of the helpful ones (honest!). :)
Paul Lathwell

Do you know what the "F" in MGF stands for?
Mega

Yeah, it stands for f*ck off Mega ('scuse my french but very appropiate)
Gareth Kidman

Gareth, just ignore him. The disruption is even causing confusion between honest posters.
Graeme Card

"Already let the 306 eat two ZR 160s!"

Guys, just read the final post that I made on the 'MG Z Saloons' section called 'ZT160 vs. 306 GTI-6'

He had no answer to my final point. I think this explains it all - what a sad Pug driving tosser/boy racer! Go and play with the Nova's and XR2's - you don't mix well with real sports cars

Gotta admire his guts, how can anyone who drives a 306 pull down any car let alone an MGF. One word...I think it's called jealousy!

And as I said before, I don't own an MGF - I'm unbiased and stating the truth - if you don't like it, tough sh*t!

Ay, Ay, Ay...calm down, calm down!
John

Hum, let me see do I think MX5 owners have this kind of hastle? Probably not, but then the F outsold the MX5 5 to 1 in the year to July. Oh and I have just read that more Fs have been sold in the first 10 months of this year than all of last year. All these gulible people buying these crap cars.....
John Manson

Well I used to drive a Renault Twingo and it can beat a golf GTI up to about 30MPH, very handy around town.....:-)
