MG MGF Technical - Will I need new tyres???
Hi...had a big moment in my 1 month old 1.8i.....major braking caused big skid from 70 mph...luckily didn't hit anything...but now on smooth roads I can hear a rhythmic rubble coming I think from the front offside. At first I thought puncture, but it isn't....think I may have 'flatted' one or more of the tyres...can't get it to Kwik Fit till the w/end.... Anybody come across this??? If I have put a flat on the tyre, is the safest thing to replace or just let it 'wear' back in....there's major vibes and on non-smooth roads you wouldn't notice?? Any thoughts?? |

Hmm, sounds like you have flat spotted that tyre to me, only solution I know of is to change the tyre. I would have thought that they don't "wear back in" because all tyre wear is relative to the tyre service, for it to wear back flat again, the rest of the tyre would have to wear at a different rate to the flat bit. HTH Steve. |

The edges of the flat would round off though! The only reason to replace the tyre would be if it were below the limit on the flat, if you are getting a shake at particular speeds (usually 60-80 mph) then the tyre is out of balance and should be rebalanced. My advice- take it to a garage you trust and ask if it looks OK. Will |

I thought ABS was standard now, and you should not be able to flat spot a tyre with ABS working.... |

ABS used to only be standard on VVC's I think... Cheers Kieren |

IIRC ABS is still an option on 1.8i MGFs... Problem could be either the tyre, or a warped brake disc (because your car is so new, the pads won't yet had time to bed in properly- a process that can take up to 1000 miles of 'normal' motoring). Either way, a good tyre centre should reveal the answer for you. |

David...no ABS is not standard on 1.8i....!!!!! |

Not sure if KF are the right people to ask. I seem to remember in a recent Which? study the cars came back with more problems (but my memory isn't what it used to be). Still, I'm sure they'd help you with that exhaust you didn't know was busted. |

Agree about KF. Took my cavalier in there a few years ago to get the oil changed I think (I know, lazy, but it was only a tenner!). Anyway, the guy had a look round my car and I though "here we go!". He commented that my rear shocks were leaking and should be replaced. I said "Oh really, I bloody well hope not cause you replaced them 6 months ago!". At that, he took another close look and said, "Oh, err actually they look ok... err " hee hee! Never been back since! Chris |

Many years ago I took my MG Metro into KF to have the exhaust replaced. I had to take it back three times because the downpipe kept breaking near the manifold. On the last occasion they replaced the support bracket that they had cut off with an angle grinder when they removed my original exhaust system. That cured the problem. I have not used KF again and would not recommend anyone to use them. Ralph |

Can't agree with Ralph enough about KF. I suppose there are the odd decent ones about but I've yet to find them and I have tried a number. The last straw was with my Pug 309GTI (before my F). They replaced the whole exhaust, but it took 5 re-visits to get it sorted and not blowing. End cause: they fitted a Citroen gasket ring instead of a Pug one. Why? Because it looked the same!! Says it all Bunch of bloody cowboys. Coudn't care less with a clapped out 10yr old Pug, but I certainly do care about my lovely year old F!!!!! |
