MG MGF Technical - Will not start
My 1996 MGF just will not start....It turns over fires briefly then dies then just continues to turn over....Never had this problem before and I didn't get any warning signs. One day ( Last Saturday ) it was running fine the next day no go. I have had the car nearly two yrs it is always garaged and has been used daily. I have checked the fuel line , fuses and replaced all the obvious items, spark plugs, plug leads and fitted a new battery. Can any one give me any idea what this problem could be .....HELP !!! Many thanks |

Maybe try new NGK plugs and HT leads from B&G? I replaced mine and all my symptoms disappeared straight away. Oh oh!! I forgot, that's it. there is a sensor which costs about 15 pounds. Fuel sensor I think it must be that. I had to replace that too. Take it to Rover and test it with Testbook. It will come up with some faults. Look up in the archive, you will find heaps more. Good luck! Regards, Hanah |

Frank, you should add whether it's a VVC or 1.8i. Makes it easier for the engine speciallists to reply hints for further analysis. If it happened just from one day to the other, than I would think on any broken sensor. And they are several at the engine. Dieter |

Frank Just wanted to ask if when you replaced the leads you got the sequence correct It sounds to me like a lead/plug problem - and just wondered if you may have mixed the leads when renewing? If not - It may be a more serious electronic fault - I think Nick had to replace his ECU unit after it failed to start but that is one of many reasons why its not firing up Best way to find out and probably the cheapest is to get rover test diagnoses! Some other things to check - all lead / coil connections /battery / Distributer/rotor arm if its the 1.8i - When replacing the leads did you remove and replace the distributer cap = sometimes can be fussy along with rotor arms - worth taking off and putting back on again! - Check all connections - also check inside distributor and clean connectors - if there furred up the new leads wond make contact ! All connections to sensors especialy fuel and air As it seems to be firing occasionally i assume your alarm isnt staying in immobilser mode! Fuel to inlet ? May be worth taking out the plugs and seeing if they are "wet" ie too much fuel / flooding - blocked air filter! |
