MG MGF Technical - Wipers not working
HI, My wipers stopped working yesterday. Tonight I opened the motor and it was a little dirty inside so I cleaned it up but still no luck. I have checked for power on the supply plug, I have a standing current on the green wire (from fuse 13?) but when I switch the wipers on I don't get power on any of the other terminals. Does this suggest a problem with the wiper switch? The screen washers are working ok. Many thanks for your views. |

I think you mean a voltage. This may be for the intermittent wipe. And yes if the fuses are OK then the swictch may be the problem You need a meter or test lamp (test LED) to see if volts are reaching the switch, and then leaving it. You could try taking a wire direct from the battery to the wipers as well (in line fuse a good idea) that will check the motor. Also worth checking the earth is good, again a meter on ohms is the way to do ths,. |

Update I've had someone come round and look at it. He pointed out that to test the other supplies you have to connect them to positive not earth! When he did this they proved ok. Went I showed him inside the motor he pointed out that the brushers were corroded and one was falling apart! So I tried taking the motor off using this guide- http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/common_problems/wipers/wiper_motor_replacement.htm However, I could not get the complete assembly out of the car and had to remove the motor bolts working blind. Unlike picture 1 my car has a clutch master cylinder manifold next to it that gets in the way. There must be a way of getting the assembly out, does anyone know if its ok to split the linkage ball joints or will that damage them? The new motor arrives tomorrow so hopefully I'll be fitting it over the weekend. I have a picture of my cars clutch master cylinder not sure if I can upload it here? |

Would upload some pictures but cannot get it to work. |

I imagine you mean the plastic cups with felt dust covers over them. Yes you can split them, you have to to replace the cups when they wear. In my case the drivers wiper stopped working and collapsed onto the bonnet. The instructions helpfully show a completly aligned force to seperate and replace them. Utterly impossible in the space you have. I used plumbers pliers to re-attach, and a screwdriver to seprate, but I wasnt lookin to re-use them. Grease with lithium grease while apart. The set of 2 arms was £30. |

I have now received a new motor from the MGOC spares. When I looked at it I thought the securing bolt holes had not been tapped since there is no machined thread in them. I've just rung MGOC and they say the bolts cut their own thread! I've never come accross that before, there's nothing special about the bolts. Has anyone experienced this? |

In a word,no! I would try it for size on the bench before fitting. |
